RR vs MI: Mumbai finish strong, leave Royals chasing 218 in Jaipur

Rajasthan Royals won the toss and opted to bowl first against the resurgent Mumbai Indians, hoping to disrupt the momentum of the five-time champions in a high-stakes IPL 2025 clash on Thursday. Despite a season marked by inconsistency and missed opportunities, the Royals have found renewed hope in teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The 14-year-old prodigy has taken the tournament by storm, potentially playing the knock of the season earlier this week. His rapid rise has provided a silver lining in what has otherwise been a turbulent campaign. While the Royals still possess a slim mathematical chance of qualifying for the play-offs, the management appears to have reconciled with the reality of their standing. A side strain has sidelined captain Sanju Samson since April 16, paving the way for Suryavanshi's fairytale debut. In just three innings, the southpaw has become the focal point of the cricketing conversation. With Samson still unavailable, Suryavanshi will once again partner Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top. Their electrifying 166-run stand against Gujarat Titans made light work of a daunting 210-run chase, showcasing a fearless brand of cricket. But Thursday presents a sterner test, facing Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the most feared pacer in world cricket. In the middle order, Shimron Hetmyer has struggled to replicate his explosive best, with the sluggish surfaces further dampening his effectiveness. Rajasthan’s inability to close out matches from dominant positions has haunted them repeatedly this season. Bowling remains a concern. While Jofra Archer has picked up wickets, he’s also leaked runs at nearly 10 per over. Sandeep Sharma too has been expensive, and notably, none of their frontline pacers boast an economy rate under nine. For Mumbai Indians, the return of Jasprit Bumrah has catalysed their resurgence. The perennial slow starters are now on a five-match winning streak under Hardik Pandya’s leadership, climbing to the summit of the points table.  Another bright spot for Mumbai has been Corbin Bosch, who impressed on debut with a strike rate of 200 and a crucial wicket. With seasoned stars like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav firing again, Mumbai appear to be peaking at the perfect time. Rohit Sharma strides out to the middle alongside Ryan Rickelton to open the innings for Mumbai Indians. The Sawai Mansingh Stadium crowd is buzzing with anticipation as Jofra Archer readies himself to deliver the first over. MI: 217/0 (20) Rajasthan Royals face a daunting chase of 218 runs against Mumbai Indians in a must-win IPL 2025 encounter at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. MI: 196/2 (18) With just two overs to go, Mumbai Indians are firmly in control and on track for a commanding total between 230 and 240. Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are finishing strong, piling on the pressure with an explosive partnership. MI: 123/2 (13) Rajasthan Royals strike again, with Riyan Parag removing Rohit Sharma. In a matter of moments, both openers are back in the hut. Parag bowled a full delivery wide outside off, and Rohit, looking to clear long-off, reached out but got an outside edge. The ball went straight to Jaiswal, who made no mistake in taking the catch at long-off. MI: 120/1 (12) Maheesh Theekshana breaks MI’s momentum by dismissing the in-form Ryan Rickelton. Theekshana bowled a flat delivery on leg-stump, which Rickelton attempted to pull across the line but missed. The ball went through to uproot the leg stump, and Theekshana celebrates the crucial breakthrough. The Royals badly needed that wicket. MI: 90/0 (9) Ryan Rickelton brings up a brisk half-century, showcasing an aggressive intent at the crease. This is also the first time in IPL 2025 that Mumbai Indians have gone wicketless in the Powerplay. MI: 45/0 (5) After 5 overs, Mumbai Indians are off to a solid start at 45 without loss. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton are steadily building a platform for a big total. MI: 16/0 (3) Ryan Rickelton struggled to connect with a couple of sweep shots, while Rohit Sharma kept the scoreboard ticking with smart strike rotation. Maheesh Theekshana bowled a disciplined third over, giving away just seven runs, including a boundary on the final delivery. His subtle variations in length and pace created pressure, especially with deliveries that angled into Rickelton’s pads and disrupted his rhythm.

Gareth Southgate spotted backing Rajasthan Royals in surprise IPL appearance

Former England football manager Gareth Southgate was on Thursday spotted soaking in the electric atmosphere at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur during IPL 2025, as Rajasthan Royals faced off against the in-form Mumbai Indians. Dressed in a Rajasthan Royals jersey and flashing a cheerful smile, Southgate blended seamlessly with the crowd, visibly enjoying the festive energy of the IPL. The man once commanding England’s tactical lines at Wembley was now reveling in the roar of boundaries and pinpoint yorkers under the dazzling stadium lights of the Pink City. His presence was noticed early in the match, shortly after Royals skipper Riyan Parag won the toss and elected to bowl first. Southgate was fully engaged, clapping and cheering as Mumbai openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton walked out to the middle. His animated support suggested a genuine interest in the game, even if his allegiance raised a few eyebrows online. While cricket fans were surprised by his unexpected appearance, it was football fans who lit up social media with playful banter. “Southgate supporting RR? If they choke, I know why,” quipped one user, taking a cheeky jab at England’s near-miss history in major tournaments under Southgate’s leadership. "Gareth Southgate in a Rajasthan Royals jersey giving very 'Polar bear in Arlington Texas' vibes', wrote another. Many fans embraced the moment as a delightful sporting crossover, welcoming the former Three Lions boss to the chaotic charm of the IPL. Some even applauded him for immersing himself in different sporting cultures post-coaching. As Southgate settled into the Jaipur evening, the Mumbai Indians made their intentions clear. After five overs, they reached 45 without loss, with Rickelton batting fluently on 27 and Rohit Sharma providing steady support with 17. MI, riding a wave of five consecutive victories, looked set to extend their winning streak with another dominant performance. At the time of writing, Mumbai were 126 for two wickets, with in-form Suryakumar Yadav and skipper Hardik Pandya at the crease. Earlier, Ryan Rickleton and Rohit Sharma unleashed their carnage with the bat contributing 61 and 53 runs, respectively.

IPL 2025: Finch backs Dhoni’s leadership amid CSK’s rocky campaign

Following their loss to Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai Super Kings' hopes of reaching the IPL 2025 playoffs have all but ended. Despite CSK’s on-field struggles, former Australian cricketer Aaron Finch shared his thoughts on MS Dhoni’s continued presence and influence on the field. "When Dhoni gave up the captaincy a few years ago, I don't think he thought he'd have to deal with all this again. But it hasn't gone CSK's way this season. MS is 43, not playing much cricket, just turning up for the IPL, but every moment he's on the field is magical," said Finch on JioHotstar. Furthermore, the former cricketer urged cricket fans to attend at least one CSK game while MS Dhoni is still playing. "The noise when he walks out of the dressing room... when he comes out to bat... it's unbelievable. I urge every cricket fan -- if you can, you must go to a CSK game while MS Dhoni is still playing," he added. Also Read: Rajasthan elect to bowl first, seek to tame resurgent MI Chennai Super Kings have suffered significant setbacks with the injuries to their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Gurjapneet Singh, both of whom have been ruled out of the IPL 2025 season. Amid a challenging campaign, the only positives for CSK have been the inclusion of three young players, Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre, and Dewald Brevis. The trio has consistently delivered strong performances in every match they've played. The loss to Punjab Kings marked CSK's eighth defeat of the season, leaving them in 10th place on the points table. Out of 10 matches, the Dhoni-led side has only managed to win two. Meanwhile, under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings have surged to second place with six wins. Coming to the match, PBKS won the toss and opted to bowl first. CSK was 48/3 at one point, then a 78-run stand between Sam Curran and Dewald Brevis (32 in 26 balls, with two wins and a six) helped them get back in the innings. Curran continued to fire single-handedly, making 88 in 47 balls, with nine fours and four sixes. CSK was bundled out for 190 in 19.2 overs. It was a hat-trick from Yuzvendra Chahal (4/32) which made CSK collapse from 172/4 to 190 all out. Arshdeep Singh (2/25) was also superb with the ball. During the run-chase, Priyansh Arya (23 in 15 balls, with five fours) and Prabhsimran Singh gave PBKS a quick start with a 44-run stand. A 72-run stand between Prabhsimran (54 in 36 balls, with five fours and three sixes) and skipper Shreyas Iyer solidified PBKS' control over the game. Iyer continued to take control, scoring 72 in just 41 balls, with five fours and four sixes and stitching a partnership with Shashank Singh (23 in 12 balls, with a four and two sixes). PBKS did lose wickets towards the end, but won by four wickets with two balls left. Khaleel Ahmed (2/28) and Matheesha Pathirana (2/45) were the top wicket-takers for CSK. (With ANI Inputs)

Tactical bowling picks MI can rely on to dismantle centurion Vaibhav Suryavanshi

As IPL 2025 races toward its business end, the playoff picture remains wide open. Nine out of ten teams are still in contention, with only Chennai Super Kings officially knocked out of the race. In this tightly contested scenario, every match holds immense value, and Thursday’s clash between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur is no exception. Mumbai Indians are riding a wave of momentum, having secured five consecutive victories. A win in this match could see them rise to the top of the points table. However, their biggest challenge may come from teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who stunned everyone with a blistering century against Gujarat Titans in his previous outing. While his form is red-hot, MI possess the firepower to counter his threat. Hardik Pandya: While Suryavanshi looked in total control against GT, it was notable that their pacers didn’t test him with hard-length deliveries, a potential weakness. Skipper Pandya, whose natural bowling length sits around back of a length, could be the perfect candidate to exploit this gap. Known for his aggressive mindset, Pandya might even open the bowling to surprise the youngster with short-pitched deliveries and unsettle him early. Jasprit Bumrah: The undisputed leader of Mumbai’s bowling unit, Bumrah is arguably the best bowler in the world. Suryavanshi, 14, will be facing a completely different class of bowling than what he encountered against GT. Bumrah’s arsenal of variations, combined with his precision under pressure, makes him a nightmare for any batter, let alone a teenager new to the big stage. Though he began this season slowly due to injury, Bumrah has found his rhythm and form, making him a daunting prospect for any opposition batter. Will Jacks: An unconventional choice perhaps, but Jacks could prove to be a masterstroke. Deployed often as a partnership-breaker by captain Hardik, Jacks has impressed this season with both economy and wicket-taking ability. Against the left-handed Suryavanshi, Jacks’ off-breaks will turn away, adding another layer of difficulty. With a better economy rate than even Bumrah, Jacks’ subtle variations could outfox the teenager at a crucial stage.

What’s next for CSK? Dhoni’s post-exit talk with CEO Viswanathan fuels rumours

Just when Chennai Super Kings’ IPL 2025 campaign seemed to have hit its lowest point, something off the field reignited speculation among fans. Following CSK’s loss to Punjab Kings and their subsequent elimination from playoff contention, a moment between two of the franchise’s most recognisable figures, MS Dhoni and CEO Kasi Viswanathan, captured the attention of every camera in the stadium and sparked widespread chatter online. Csk ceo clapping to dhoni pic.twitter.com/iiIJJaEobJ — Pappu Plumber (@tappumessi) April 30, 2025 In the video that appeared far more than just a routine dugout chat, Dhoni and Viswanathan were seen standing side by side on the sidelines for several minutes. With Dhoni’s future in the IPL increasingly uncertain, the exchange only added fuel to the fire. Was the conversation about the team’s underwhelming season? Was it about CSK’s strategic plans going forward? Or perhaps, was it about the question everyone’s asking: “Will Dhoni play IPL 2026?” No one knows for sure, but fans and body language analysts alike are already dissecting the smiles, nods, and eye contact in search of clues. CSK in IPL 2025: A failed campaign This season has been a forgettable chapter in CSK's storied legacy. Their once impenetrable fortress at Chepauk has turned into familiar ground for opposition wins, with only one win from five matches played at home. What began on a positive note, an opening win over arch-rivals Mumbai Indians, has quickly unraveled into a string of underwhelming performances. The first dent in their home dominance came at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who ended CSK’s long-standing unbeaten home record dating back to 2008. Chasing 197, Chennai stumbled to 146/8, setting the tone for further struggles. Delhi Capitals were next to exploit the vulnerabilities. A commanding 77-run knock from KL Rahul, supported by stellar spells from Vipraj Nigam and Kuldeep Yadav, saw DC defend 184 comfortably, restricting CSK to 158/5. The spiral continued with a crushing defeat to the Kolkata Knight Riders. CSK’s batting unit crumbled against spin, managing only 103/9 as Sunil Narine (3/13) and Varun Chakravarthy (2/22) dismantled their lineup. KKR chased the target with ease, sealing the match with 59 balls to spare. A fourth home loss came against Sunrisers Hyderabad in a match that echoed past heartbreaks from the 2008 and 2012 seasons, both of which ended with CSK falling short in the final. Harshal Patel's 4/28 derailed CSK’s innings at 154, despite promising efforts from Ayush Mhatre (30) and Dewald Brevis (42). SRH chased the target in 18.4 overs, led by Ishan Kishan (44) and a composed finish from Kamindu Mendis (32*) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (19*).

Cryptic age fraud claim by Vijender sparks rumours linking Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Olympic bronze medallist and former world boxing champion Vijender Singh stirred a social media storm on Wednesday after sharing a cryptic post that hinted at possible age fraud within Indian cricket. His remark has reignited debate over the persistent issue of age manipulation in Indian sports, particularly in age-group events. "Bhai aaj kal umar choti ker ke cricket me bhe khelne lage (Players have started reducing their age in cricket too)," Singh posted on X, formerly Twitter. His comment, though not naming anyone directly, arrived amid growing speculation around Rajasthan Royals' young batting sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Bhai aaj kal umar choti ker ke cricket me bhe khelne lage 🤔 — Vijender Singh (@boxervijender) April 30, 2025 Suryavanshi, who is officially 14 years and 32 days old, made headlines on Monday after smashing a historic 101 off just 38 balls against Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. In only his third Indian Premier League (IPL) appearance, the teenage prodigy became the youngest player to score a century in IPL and T20 history. His 35-ball ton is now the fastest by an Indian and the second-fastest overall in the league’s records. While Suryavanshi’s performance drew widespread praise, it also triggered skepticism on social media about the authenticity of his age. Some users began circulating older videos and questioning whether the teenager is indeed 14. Another user shared an old interview clip of the cricketer, claiming, “Vaibhav is definitely older than he states.” A separate post added, “No way Vaibhav Suryavanshi is 14 years old. This is a 3-4-year-old video where he himself accepted that he looks younger than his age and defo not 15! This case should be deeply investigated by @BCCI, and ban him if found guilty.” Earlier last year, Vaibhav’s father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, had categorically denied any wrongdoing, responding to similar accusations. “When he was 8 and half years old he first appeared for BCCI bone test. He has already played India U-19. We don't fear anyone. He can again undergo age test,” he told PTI.
