Rohit Sharma and Trent Boult stole the limelight with outstanding performances as Mumbai Indians comfortably defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday.

The win was built on a clinical bowling display led by Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult, who restricted Hyderabad to a modest 143/8 in their IPL 2025 encounter.

Chahar (2/12) and Boult (4/26) set the tone with their exceptional opening spells, which left SRH reeling at a disastrous 13/4 by the fifth over. The early breakthroughs decimated SRH’s top-order, with Travis Head (0), Abhishek Sharma (8), Ishan Kishan (1), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (2) all failing to contribute. As a result, Hyderabad could manage only 24 runs in the powerplay, a testament to the effectiveness of Mumbai’s seamers, who exploited the conditions to perfection.

It was Heinrich Klaasen's resilient knock that prevented SRH from complete collapse. The South African wicketkeeper-batter fought back under pressure, smashing a gutsy 71 off 44 balls, featuring seven boundaries and three sixes. Klaasen’s counter-attack was instrumental in dragging Hyderabad to a respectable total. His 99-run partnership with Abhinav Manohar (43 off 37 balls) was the only significant resistance in an otherwise one-sided innings. While Klaasen punished the loose deliveries, Manohar rotated strike effectively, ensuring Hyderabad's score progressed at a steady pace.

Despite their valiant efforts, the absence of support from the rest of the batting unit meant SRH never really recovered to post a competitive total. Their innings faltered badly in the middle stages, leaving them well short of a challenging target.

Earlier, Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bowl, a decision that proved highly fruitful. The MI bowlers wasted no time in making early inroads, dismantling SRH’s top order with precision. The match, however, took on a somber note as both teams wore black armbands to honor the victims of the recent Pahalgam terror attack, showing a mark of respect and unity amid the competition.

With a target of 144 set on a solid batting surface, Mumbai Indians appeared confident in their chase, while SRH hoped their bowlers could deliver something special to defend the underwhelming total.
