The Western Railway has initiated urgent repair work on the Mahim South foot overbridge, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The decision was made following the discovery of cracked precast RCC slabs and severely corroded, perforated supporting beams. To ensure commuter convenience, two alternative foot overbridges located at the north end of Mahim station remain accessible, allowing passengers to move between the station and both the eastern and western sides.
A spokesperson said that in the interest of passenger safety, the replacement work was essential. The repair work commenced on April 16 and is expected to be completed by April 30. The bridge spans a total length of 40 metres and a width of four metres.
We need a quick and adequate response to any kind of public infrastructure. This is especially true of stations that see a large number of footfalls. While it is the authority who is responsible for safety checks, alert commuters can also raise a red flag if they witness something that is unsafe and try and bring it to the notice of somebody responsible.
Today, social media has brought us closer to decision makers or given a platform to citizens to air their woes or concerns. Used wisely and well, that too can be used to draw attention to possible danger. Crumbling infra needs to be barricaded off quickly, or shut down and repairs started. If feasible, an alternative can be arranged but people cannot and must not be allowed to use something rickety and in need of repair at any cost. Too often, there is dilly-dallying, passing the buck between different agencies till a disaster occurs and only then is a particular facility closed off. Let us deviate from a familiar pattern and ensure repairs are quality.
