Shiv Sena (UBT) has raised concerns over unchecked and unscreened migrants joining delivery aggregators and other online service platforms. In a letter to the Mumbai police, the party has demanded that the law enforcement agency implement a regulatory policy to verify and monitor the credentials of delivery personnel operating in the city. In its letter, the Sena alleged that in the pursuit of rapid expansion and quick deliveries, companies are compromising the safety of citizens.

Speaking with mid-day, Akhil Chitre, president of the Shiv Sanchar Sena (IT, Electronics and Communication Wing of UBT), cited an incident in which assailants posed as delivery agents and murdered a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader in Tamil Nadu. “There are rising complaints of delivery boys indulging in serious criminal activities and even traffic violations, such as rash driving and, in some cases, driving on the wrong side,” Chitre said.

It may be recalled that last year, a woman lodged a complaint with the Goregaon police after receiving an obscene message on her phone just hours after a heated argument with a food delivery person from an online app. In fact, earlier this year, mid-day had reported on the seizure of e-bikes by the Mumbai traffic police. According to the report, between August 2024 and January 12, 2025, cases were registered under the BNS against 985 delivery boys using e-bikes. A total of 1754 bikes were seized, and fines were issued in 3394 cases.

Chitre added that many aggregators do not conduct any background checks or maintain data on individuals they employ for delivery services. “Even the Mumbai Police does not have any data on delivery boys operating in the city,” the Gen.Next Sena leader claimed. A delegation led by Chitre met Satyanarayan Choudhary, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), and submitted a letter outlining their demands on the matter.

To enable effective background checks, Chitre urged the Mumbai Police to frame regulations that would not only help prevent criminal activities but also ensure that the police have complete information about service providers and their employees. “We will not tolerate any kind of compromise with public safety,” Chitre warned, demanding that all delivery service providers be mandated to wear uniforms and carry identity cards.
