Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday flagged off the trial run and technical inspection of Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Phase 1), which connects Thane to Mumbai.
The trial run and technical inspection of Metro Line 9 (Phase 1) which spans from Kashigaon to Dahisar began on May 14, making it the first-ever metro line in Thane district in Maharashtra.
The inauguration ceremony was held in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and other key officials from the MMRDA.
CM Fadnavis stated that the project is a first-of-its-kind in the region and is a part of a larger goal to build 50 km of metro lines this year.
He said, "Technical testing for this phase has begun. This stretch offers seamless connectivity along the Western Express Highway and will act as a major decongestion solution. It is the first time in the MMR that a double-decker structure combining a metro and a flyover has been constructed. Mira-Bhayandar will immensely benefit from this integration, and we are committed to completing 50 km of metro this year, followed by 62 km next year and 60 km in the year after. By 2027, metro travel will expand considerably, alleviating the load on our arterial roads.followed by 62 km next year, and 60 km the year after, transforming Mumbai’s urban mobility by 2027."
Here are the key highlights of the new Metro Line-9
- Metro Line-9 connects Mira-Bhayandar to Mumbai’s western and eastern suburbs and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
- The Metro Line-9 is part of India’s first double-decker metro and flyover project, sharing a single viaduct structure.
- Phase-1 spans 4.4 km, running from Dahisar (East) to Kashigaon, with stations at Dahisar (East), Pandurangwadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon.
- Once fully operational, the new metro line will provide direct commute to Mumbai Airport via Metro Lines 7 and 7A, Andheri (West) via Line 2B, Ghatkopar via Lines 7 and 1, Link Road via Line 2A at Dahisar (East), Thane via Line 10 (future development), Vasai-Virar via the upcoming Line 13, officials said.
"The proposed extension up to Virar will ensure connectivity across Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts. Under MMRDA’s leadership, we are working towards a 337 km-long metro network for Mumbai. Our goal is to commission 50–60 km of metro each year, thereby offering complete last-mile and end-to-end connectivity. This will bring down the number of vehicles on roads and reduce pollution levels significantly," Eknath Shinde said.
The officials on Wednesday began the trial runs and will also conduct a review of the technical systems to ensure safety and operational efficiency before Metro Line 9 is opened to public.
"Metro Line-9 is a testimony to our (Mahayuti govt) commitment to fast-tracking infrastructure projects that benefit the common man," Ajit Pawar said.
Elaborating on the Metro Line-9's connectivity between Mumbai and Thane, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA said,"Metro Line-9 is a strategic connector that integrates Mira-Bhayandar with the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region. With seamless interchanges to key metro lines including Line-2A, Line-7, Line-1, and the upcoming Lines 10 and 13, this corridor creates a continuous, end-to-end travel experience from Mira-Bhayandar to Andheri, Ghatkopar, Thane, and even Vasai-Virar. It exemplifies our vision of 'Mumbai in Minutes'."
