Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Monday said that the chawls along Elphinstone Bridge in Mumbai must be assured of in-situ redevelopment by the MMRDA before it goes ahead with the demolition of the bridge.

The Worli MLA has also opposed the immediate demolition of the bridge.

In a post on X, Aaditya Thackeray wrote, "Last week the Shiv Sena (UBT) protested against the demolition of the Elphinstone Bridge by the MMRDA. We will not let the govt shut down this connector till the Ganpatrao Kadam Marg work is complete and the Sion Bridge is opened for traffic."

He stated that the Shiv Sena (UBT) has opposed the proposed demolition of the Elphinstone Bridge by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Aaditya Thackeray has also raised concerns about the ongoing work on Sane Guruji Marg, which has been partially taken up again by the MMRDA, further limiting East-West connectivity in the area.

He further wrote on X that the part was firm on it decision to not let the govt shut down Elphinstone Bridge till the Ganpatrao Kadam Marg work is complete and the Sion Bridge is opened.

He stated the the Sane Guruji Marg was also partially taken up again for work by the MMRDA.

He wrote, "The Worli- Sewri Connector was started by us (MVA govt) in 2021 and 48 per cent of the work was completed till our govt was toppled in mid 2022.  However, back then, we had conducted trust building measures with local residents and shopkeepers for their in- situ redevelopment."

Aaditya stated, "Ideally the MMRDA should complete the rest of the works of the same connector, like the ramps on both sides, girder launching for the other parts and only after the other East- West connectors are opened up, and residents are assured of their housing, should they proceed with Elphinstone Bridge demolition, after our festivals are done with later this year."

He suggested that the MMRDA, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Mumbai Traffic Police must communicate with each other for such works. He claimed that the coordination among different civic authorities was lacking.

The Elphinstone Bridge was scheduled to be shut for traffic on Friday but before the authorities reached the site, several residents of Parel gathered at the bridge in to protest against its shut down.

The lane at the Parel-end was blocked by the protesting residents and JCB machines, leading to closure of traffic moving towards Prabhadevi for a sometime. However, the traffic movement from Prabhadevi to Parel was later functional as usual.

The Elphinstone Bridge has been kept open for traffic for now.
