Mohanlal and Shobana’s Malayalam film Thudarum is all set to hit screens tomorrow. However, despite the buzz around their on-screen reunion, the promotional activity by the lead stars has been suspiciously quiet. While director Tharun Moorthy has been actively promoting the film and giving interviews to multiple portals across Kerala, the actors have taken a step back.

So why the silence?

In a recent interview, director Tharun Moorthy addressed this directly. When asked why Mohanlal and Shobana were not part of the pre-release promotions, he explained that it was a deliberate decision.

“What will you see in cinema if I get Mohanlal and Shobana to promote the film together before release?” Moorthy asked rhetorically.

He added that the chemistry between the stars is best experienced on the big screen, as intended. However, he hinted that the full team including Mohanlal and Shobana may come together for post-release promotional events.

The director also said that they were attempting a new thing where people behind the camera would talk about the film and promote it pre-release. “When you constantly see actors on your phone, there’s no curiosity left to watch them together in theatres,” Moorthy explained.

Tharun Moorthy made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Operation Java in 2021, followed by Saudi Vellakka in 2022. Both films were praised for their storytelling and cast performances.

Thudarum marks Mohanlal and Shobana’s 56th collaboration, and fans are eager to see their magic once again. Shobana made her comeback to cinema with the 2020 Malayalam film Varane Avashyamundu, co-starring Suresh Gopi, Dulquer Salmaan, and Kalyani Priyadarshan.

About Thudarum

The story for Thudarum (also referred to as L360) is penned by Tharun Moorthy and K.R. Sunil. This is the 14th film produced by Renjith under Rejaputra Films. Mohanlal plays the role of a taxi driver, reminiscent of his early iconic performances. The film also features veteran actor Jagdish in a prominent role and is expected to release during the Puja holidays in October.

Recently, there was buzz around the genre of the film with Mohanlal hinting it be a thriller like his hit film Drishyam. However, the directed clarified it is a family drama.
