Suchitra Krishnamoorthi's exclusive interview for Mother's Day 2025 Pic/Instagram

Mother’s Day Exclusive | Suchitra Krishnamoorthi on therapy postpartum

Actor-singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi resumes work with her podcast, The Music Stories, a one-stop destination highlighting forgotten musicians, unsung harmonies, gharanas steeped in tradition, and the science of sound itself. Beyond her work, Suchitra is a loving mother to Kaveri Kapur, who stepped into showbiz with the 2025 romantic comedy Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story. With Mother’s Day 2025 around the corner, Suchitra gets candid about her journey to motherhood, dealing with postpartum, the effect of separation from Shekhar Kapur, and more.  Suchitra Krishnamoorthi on a difficult postpartum  Recalling the day she found out she’d be a mother, Suchitra remembers that it all started with her incessant craving for cheese. The nausea kicked in, and the confirmed pregnancy took her by surprise. However, the postpartum period was severe. She explains, “I was living alone in London, I had no family around me, and my body and my mind reacted very, extremely. I would have crying bouts. I would have very deep pits that my mind would fall into. I was not able to come out of it for a long time, and I couldn't understand what was going on. I had to take therapy.”           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Suchitra Krishnamoorthi (@suchitrapublic) She added that it was “quite bad” and had to take medication for a while. “This is something many women experience and are too embarrassed to reach for help or even admit that it's happening to them. They're told, ‘What nonsense, put your child first, just ignore how you're feeling,’ but if you're not feeling good, you cannot be a good mother. So I feel it's very important to get the right help at the right time,” maintained Suchitra.  Suchitra on her separation from filmmaker Shekhar Kapur  Suchitra married filmmaker Shekhar Kapur in 1999 but divorced in 2007. When asked if it was challenging as a parent, she agreed that it was in terms of emotionally, financially, and socially, but she dealt with it one day at a time. “There is no formula. You have to take it as it comes and keep your mind open and fluid to do whatever it takes to make things work,” she says.  Is Suchitra a tiger mom when it comes to daughter Kaveri?  Suchitra’s daughter Kaveri decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps and embraced acting. Did the '90s star feel hesitant about it? She states, “Not at all.” Does she consider herself to be a tiger mom - someone who is very much invested in their child’s career and life choices? Suchitra says that although she wouldn’t be as involved on the work front, she indeed cares about Kaveri’s well-being. “I'm interested that she be well, she be looked after, and she enjoy herself, and I will do everything to facilitate that. Am I going to dictate what she has to do? No way. And she's too much of an artist to allow that kind of interference from me or her father (Shekhar Kapur). And we respect the artistic journey too much to even impose on her. I want her to feel protected and safe, and that's my job, and I'll do it fiercely.”

Trump's 100 per cent tariff on foreign films could hurt Indian cinema: Experts

On May 4, US President Donald Trump announced a 100 per cent tariff on movies produced outside the country, believing that the move would boost the number of films made in America. The result was chaos and confusion within Hollywood as well as film industries around the world, as Trump did not provide details on how the tariffs would be implemented. Even as the President softened his stance on May 5 and stated that a decision would be made only after he met with members of Hollywood, the news has sparked concern in the Indian film industry. After all, the US is a key overseas market that contributes significantly to the box-office revenue of major Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil films.   As mid-day reached out to producers and trade experts, they unanimously noted the ambiguity of the current situation as it is unclear whether the tariff would apply to payments made to acquire distribution rights of foreign films for their US release. There is also a lack of clarity whether tariffs would apply to movies on streamers as well. Trade expert Ramesh Bala pointed out, “Many American films are shot in Canada, Europe, and elsewhere to lower production costs. If the tariff applies to any part of the film made outside US borders, then many Hollywood films would technically qualify as foreign.”  Immediate releases like Akshay Kumar and Jacqueline Fernandez’s Housefull 5 is likely to be unaffected as the policy rollout will take time America, a crucial market Bala agreed that the move, if implemented, would be detrimental for Indian films. “The US market is crucial for Indian theatrical releases, especially because of the sizeable South Asian diaspora,” he stated, pointing to blockbusters like RRR (2022) and Jawan (2023) that earned significantly from their US market. “High price points due to tariffs will dissuade distributors, reduce the number of films reaching theatres, and ultimately limit consumer choice. Small or medium-budget movies will likely skip theatrical release in the US entirely, missing out on a potentially lucrative market. The governments of affected countries, including India, will need to step in and engage in dialogue with the US administration to either seek exemptions or negotiate a more balanced trade approach,” he stated.   Trade analyst Akshaye Rathi said it was too early to respond to Trump’s announcement “with assumptions”. He, however, said that this could serve as a trigger to fortify our own ecosystem. Citing the example of Russia, he said, “After the Ukraine conflict, Hollywood studios stopped releasing films in Russia, cutting off nearly 95 per cent of their box-office content overnight. The Russian government actively invested in its local film industry boosting both volume and quality. Within two-three years, they’ve managed to nearly return to pre-war box office numbers. The Indian film industry is still operating at a fraction of its potential.”  The US collections of RRR and Jawan contributed significantly to their box-office earnings. Pics/AFP, PTI, Instagram Don’t panic before the policy rollout Housefull 5 will be one of the first big Bollywood releases in the wake of the announcement. With Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh leading it, the laugh riot is targeted as much at the Indian audience as at the diaspora. Diljit Dosanjh’s Sardaar Ji 3, slated for June 27 release, too is aimed at the diaspora. Bala assumed the films would go unscathed, reasoning, “The proposal is under consideration and is part of a broader USTR [United States Trade Representative] investigation. There is no final rollout date. This gives a buffer, but later films will have to review [their distribution plans].”  An executive from Jio Studios, who did not wish to be named, dialled down the fear with facts. “The US market contributes only around four per cent to the total box-office earnings of an average Indian film. So, the overall damage is limited. If the tariff doesn’t apply to OTT platforms, it might even benefit producers, as they can sell their films directly to streaming services.” Supriya Yarlagadda, executive director, Annapurna Studios, a production and distribution house from South India, admitted that the policy will hurt not only Hindi films, but also their South counterpart. “US is a large distribution territory for various Indian language films. While the latest news is of concern, we will have to wait for the policy details to emerge before panicking,” she said. A new territory to capture A question on the mind of many is: Can China or Japan replace the US? Bala said a hard no. “China’s annual foreign film quota [around 10 titles under revenue-sharing rules] makes it an unreliable replacement for the US. Other regions like Australia and Southeast Asia are much smaller. The US remains the only overseas market with scale, infrastructure, and a sizeable diaspora audience.”

Pakistani fan rushes to meet her ‘entire dil’ Shah Rukh Khan before Met Gala

Shah Rukh Khan, one of the biggest global stars, made his grand Met Gala debut this year in a stylish Sabyasachi ensemble. No fan moment when Shah Rukh is present—how is it even possible? While the two countries, India and Pakistan, are at loggerheads, it's the artists that are still holding on to the cross-border relationship. At Met 2025, a Pakistani-origin food content creator living in New York stole the spotlight as she got a chance to see Shah Rukh Khan. The content creator, Sehrish, shared a video titled “Come with me to find Shah Rukh Khan in NYC." Later in the video, she was seen walking near a hotel close to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In the clip, she greeted Sidharth Malhotra and called him a cutie, and also shared glimpses of Sabyasachi. But it was the arrival of King Khan that got her super excited. She captured SRK waving to his fans and attached the text that read, “Love of my life, light of my life, my entire dil — King Khan." This video by the creator met with a grand response, garnering over 2.7 million views. Check out the Video About Shah Rukh Khan's MET look For his debut appearance at the Met Ball, the actor wore a floor-length elongated coat in Tasmanian superfine wool with monogrammed Japanese horn buttons. "The coat is hand canvassed, single-breasted with a peak collar and wide lapels. Paired with a crepe de chine silk shirt and tailored superfine wool trousers. A pleated satin kamarbandh completes this bespoke look," Sabyasachi said. Asked to describe his look on the gala's blue carpet, the actor told reporters it was designer Sabyasachi who conceived it "as an expression of freedom and trying to be resolute and resilient against things that can oppress you." Was Shah Rukh familiar with the Met Gala and its theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, a homage to Black fashion, before he was set to make his debut? "Honestly, no. In the last 20 days, I got to understand what it (Met Gala) was, and being an actor, I thought it (the theme of Black Style) was interesting... The resolve to change things without aggression or anger but have exuberance of art in it... I thought it was marvellous," he said.

As per PTI, these included Jaish-e-Mohammad’s base in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s sprawling markaz in Muridke, located near Lahore. Additional targets in PoK included Kotli and Muzaffarabad, regions known to host camps and training grounds for both LeT and JeM. The Indian Ministry of Defence, in a statement issued at 1:44 am IST, confirmed the launch of Operation Sindoor, stating: “A little while ago, the Indian Armed Forces launched ‘Operation Sindoor,’ hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed.” The strikes, the ministry noted, were “focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature,” and did not target any Pakistani military facilities. “India has demonstrated considerable restraint in the selection of targets and method of execution,” the official statement said. All nine targets were successfully hit, and the operation was being monitored closely by Prime Minister Modi. The name ‘Sindoor’ symbolically references the red vermilion worn by married Hindu women — a poignant tribute given that several women lost their husbands in the Pahalgam attack, including an Indian Navy officer.

Aamir Khan; (right) The Kandivali school caters to kids and adults with special needs

Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par casts special needs students from Mumbai school

When watching an Aamir Khan film, you can almost always be assured of two things — sensitivity, and authenticity. That was the superstar’s objective as he set out to shoot for Sitaare Zameen Par, which sees him as a foul-tempered basketball coach who is instructed to train players with special needs. We’ve learnt that Khan and director RS Prasanna selected students from Urja Special School in Kandivali, a counselling and remedial centre that serves children and adults with special needs, to portray the players in the slice-of-life film.   Child psychologist Dr Mihir Parekh founded the school with his wife, who serves as the principal, in 2010. Recalling that the makers were looking for students aged above 18, Parekh says, “The [makers] had certain prerequisites for children and adults — they had to have Down Syndrome, with a particular height and weight. They selected 38 of my 168 students. Some essayed the role of team members, and the rest were used as audience members who have come to watch the games. The portions with my school students were all shot in Mumbai, including Andheri and Bandra.” Adapted from the Spanish film, Campeones (2018), Sitaare Zameen Par shows how Khan’s protagonist goes from initially being skeptical of his basketball team to realising how each of them is gifted in their own way. With basketball being a key aspect of the story, Parekh says some students were selected based on their proficiency in the game. “Before the shoot began, there was a prep session with the students for a week. Their parents were also introduced to the makers,” adds Parekh. The students shot with the unit over a month, and were paid remuneration.
