A tragic accident occurred on February 22 when a section of the under-construction tunnel of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) in Nagarkurnool district, Telangana, collapsed. The incident took place just four days after construction work resumed following a long break. A three-meter stretch of the tunnel caved in, trapping at least eight laborers inside. While some workers were able to escape, the remaining trapped individuals are feared to be still stuck in the rubble. Authorities swiftly responded to the emergency, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and specialized rescue teams mobilized to carry out the operation. The Task Force of the Indian Army has also been called in to assist in the ongoing rescue efforts. To aid in the search, drones were deployed, helping teams navigate the narrow and complex tunnel. The rescue teams are working around the clock to locate and evacuate the trapped workers safely. PM Modi has also reached out to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, expressing concern and offering support in the rescue operations. This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about safety at the SLBC project site. Officials have called for a thorough investigation into the causes behind the collapse, as questions regarding safety measures and construction protocols at the site remain unanswered. The efforts to rescue the trapped workers are ongoing, and authorities are doing everything they can to expedite the operation and bring those stuck inside the tunnel to safety.
