The blackout was imposed at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) complex in Anushakti Nagar as part of Operation Abhyas on Wednesday night.

After a siren was sounded, one building in the complex was evacuated. Civil defence, Central Industrial Security Force, Mumbai Police and BARC security personnel participated in the exercise. Deputy Police Commissioner Navnath Dhawale confirmed that the drill began at 8 pm.

While not many details were made available immediately as the media was not allowed on the premises, according to officials, blackout conditions prevailed for a few minutes to simulate an emergency and work out a coordinated response to the plight of stranded citizens.

"When the drill was conducted, occupants of the building that was evacuated were guided out of the structure with the guidance of civil defence volunteers," said an official.
