Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins delivered a devastating opening spell, dismantling the Delhi Capitals' top order in dramatic fashion. In what has been their most dismal start of IPL 2025 so far, Axar Patel’s side found themselves reeling at 29 for five within the first seven overs.
Cummins set the tone immediately, striking with the very first delivery of the match and continuing his dominance by removing both openers, Karun Nair and Faf du Plessis, as well as No. 3 batter Abhishek Porel. The Australian pacer has been exceptional with the new ball, conceding just 12 runs in his first three overs while accounting for three critical wickets.
Adding to Delhi's woes, Jaydev Unadkat struck a timely blow by dismissing the in-form KL Rahul for just 10 runs, shortly after the powerplay ended. The breakthrough came in the 7.1 over, further deepening Delhi’s collapse.
Cummins' precision and aggression saw him pick up wickets with the first ball of each of his first three overs, an extraordinary feat that left the Capitals shell-shocked at 15 for three in just over four overs. His spell effectively crushed Delhi’s hopes of setting a competitive total.
For Delhi Capitals, this performance marks a continuation of a troubling slide. Once early contenders at the top of the table, they have now slumped into uncertainty following back-to-back home defeats against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders. The string of losses has seen them drop from frontrunners to playoff hopefuls scrambling to regain momentum.
With this latest collapse against Sunrisers Hyderabad, their playoff aspirations hang by a thread. Another defeat today could reduce their chances of making the top four to a narrow window, as other teams continue to surge ahead.
To make matters worse, Sunrisers Hyderabad, considered out of playoff contention and with little at stake, have played like a team with nothing to lose and everything to prove. Their aggressive, no-pressure approach has turned out to be Delhi’s undoing, catching them completely off guard.
If the Capitals are to keep their IPL 2025 hopes alive, they will need more than just a fightback, they'll need a complete resurgence, starting with salvaging something from what already appears to be a disastrous outing.
