Skipper Shreyas Iyer and opener Prabhsimran Singh starred with 72 and 54 respectively as Punjab Kings beat Chennai Super Kings by four wickets in their Indian Premier League match here on Wednesday.

Chasing 191, PBKS finished the match with two balls to spare. Iyer’s 41-ball knock was laced with five fours and four sixes, while Prabhsimran hit five fours and three maximums during his 36-ball innings. Khaleel Ahmed and Matheesha Pathirana claimed two wickets each for the hosts.

The defeat has mathematically ruled bottom-placed CSK out of the Playoff race with just two wins in 10 matches. Earlier, Sam Curran braved testing conditions to produce an imperious 88, but a late four-wicket burst from Yuzvendra Chahal, including a hat-trick, ensured CSK were 190 all out.

Curran smashed his first fifty of the season (88 off 47 balls, 9x4 4x6) as he anchored the recovery process of his side from a precarious 48-3 in the Powerplay.

With their backs against the wall, Curran teamed up with Dewald Brevis (32) to carefully plot CSK’s way back into the contest with a robust 78-run fourth-wicket stand and turned on the heat on PBKS’s bowling. Until the 16th over, CSK coasted well at nearly nine runs an over when the England all-rounder picked Suryansh Shedge to attack.

However, somehow they could not manage to reach the 200-mark.

Brief scores
CSK 190 all out in 19.2 overs (S Curran 88, D Brevis 32; Y Chahal 4-32, A Singh 2-25, M Jansen 2-30) lost to PBKS 194-6 in 19.4 overs (S Iyer 72, P Singh 54; K Ahmed 2-28, M Pathirana 2-45) by 4 wickets
