Sam Curran played an exceptional knock of 88 runs off 47 balls, steering Chennai Super Kings to a competitive total of 190 all out in their IPL match against Punjab Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday. His explosive innings, which featured 9 fours and 4 sixes, injected much-needed momentum into CSK's innings after a slow start.

Curran's brilliance was evident as he reached his half-century in just 31 balls, celebrating in his signature style with a fiery phone-call gesture aimed at the CSK dugout. The gesture seemed to convey both the urgency of the situation and a personal message, emphasising the significance of his knock in a must-win game.

Before this match, the England all-rounder had only played three matches for CSK, scoring a modest 21 runs. However, under the intense pressure of a crucial encounter at Chepauk, Curran stepped up to the occasion, anchoring the innings in a game that was pivotal for Chennai's slim playoff aspirations.

Sent in to bat first, CSK faced early setbacks with their young opening duo, Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre, falling cheaply. Curran then came in at No. 3, stabilizing the innings with initial support from Ravindra Jadeja. He formed a solid 78-run partnership with Dewald Brevis, giving CSK a strong base to build on. As the 18th over ended with the scoreboard reading 172/5, CSK appeared to be on track to reach the 200-run mark.

However, after Curran's dismissal, CSK's innings began to collapse. PBKS’s leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal then took charge, running through the lower order with his second IPL hat-trick, and CSK were bowled out for 190 with just four balls remaining. This sudden collapse highlighted CSK's ongoing inconsistency this season, as they failed to capitalize on a promising position and lost their last 5 wickets for just 18 runs.

In the end, while Curran's brilliant knock provided hope, the tail's collapse underscored Chennai’s struggles to finish strong, keeping their playoff hopes hanging by a thread.

Brief scores:

Chennai Super Kings: 190 all out in 20 overs (Sam Curran 88, Dewald Brevis 32)
Punjab Kings: (Yuzvendra Chahal 4/32, Marco Jansen 2/30)
