Sister Inah Canabarro, a Brazilian woman who was the world’s oldest person, died on Wednesday just weeks short of turning 117, her religious congregation said.
The Company of Saint Teresa of Jesus, a Teresian nun congregation, said Canabarro died at home of natural causes. The wake will take place on Thursday in Porto Alegre, the capital of southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Canabarro was confirmed in January as the world’s oldest person by LongeviQuest, an organisation that tracks supercentenarians around the globe. She was born in 1908 and would have turned 117 on May 27.
