In the wake of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, China has called for a "swift and fair investigation" into the incident, which led to the loss of 26 lives, mostly tourists. China also reiterated its support for Pakistan, particularly in safeguarding its sovereignty and security amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

According to PTI reports, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a telephone conversation with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday. During the call, Dar briefed Wang on the escalating tensions between Pakistan and India following the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam region.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, expressed China's deep concern over the situation. He reiterated that combating terrorism is a global responsibility, emphasising China's consistent backing of Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts.

“As an ironclad friend and an all-weather strategic cooperative partner, China fully understands Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns and supports Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty and security interests,” Wang stated, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Further, Wang expressed China's belief that a swift and fair investigation into the Pahalgam terror attack is necessary, underscoring that conflict between India and Pakistan does not serve the fundamental interests of either nation nor benefit regional peace and stability. He called for both sides to remain restrained, avoid escalation, and work together towards de-escalation.

Dar, in turn, stressed Pakistan's long-standing commitment to fighting terrorism and affirmed that Pakistan was firmly opposed to any actions that could exacerbate tensions. He emphasised Pakistan's intent to handle the situation with maturity while maintaining open lines of communication with both China and the international community.

On April 23, China strongly condemned the terrorist attack that took place at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, in which 26 people, including tourists, were killed. “We strongly condemn the attack. China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun.

Both China's Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, and Chinese officials expressed their shock and condolences, offering sympathy to the families of the victims and the injured, while reiterating their stance against terrorism in all its forms.
