Heavy rainfall and gusty winds have resulted in tree fall fatalities over the past few days. In one such incident, on April 7, a 27-year-old man in an autorickshaw was killed while the driver was injured after a huge tree fell on the vehicle in Thane district, civic officials said recently.
According to the regional disaster management cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), a massive Gulmohar tree fell on the autorickshaw in Thane West around 6 pm. The previous night, three people were killed when a tree fell on a moving autorickshaw in Kolsewadi locality in Kalyan East amid heavy unseasonal showers accompanied by strong winds.
While our authorities need to be quick and adept with tree trimming, we will now have to exercise caution as we witness wayward weather patterns.
When the weather is extremely nasty, when going out becomes actually risky, it is better that one does not step out unless absolutely necessary. One does acknowledge that not everybody has that luxury or option, yet, if possible, we should stay indoors on challenging days.
If you see a wilting or half-broken tree in your vicinity and are concerned about its stability, find out if you can approach the relevant civic authorities in your ward, who can guide you to the correct department. Not many will do this, thinking that they may not have the time to go through the rigmarole but today, with help lines and social media, outreach may be easier. This may lead to faster or much-needed pruning, strengthening or removing a part of the tree. That may help save life or limb in extreme circumstances.
Do remember, too, not to take shelter under a tree when it rains.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their loved ones in these tragedies.
