Han was appointed prime minister, the country's No. 2 post, by then-President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office, triggering the by-election. After Mother Dairy, Amul hikes milk prices by Rs 2 per litre from May 1

Prices of Amul milk across variants in the country will be raised by Rs 2 per litre with effect from May 1 (Thursday), the marketing federation which owns the dairy brand announced on Wednesday citing an increase in input costs in the production of the commodity. The increase of Rs 2 per litre translates into a range of 3-4 per cent hike in MRP (maximum retail price) which is much lower than average food inflation, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) said in a release. The Anand, Gujarat-headquartered federation markets dairy products under the popular 'Amul' brand. "GCMMF, the marketer of milk and milk products under the brand name of Amul, has increased the prices of fresh pouch milk by Rs 2 per litre effective from May 1, 2025, in all markets across the country," said the federation. The federation pointed out that it has not increased the prices of fresh pouch milk since June 2024. "This price hike is being done due to an increase in input costs of production of milk to our 36 lakh milk producers. Our member unions have also increased farmers' prices in the same proportion over the last year," said the release. Following the hike, a 500ml pouch of Amul Gold milk will be available for Rs 34, while a one-litre pouch of the same brand will cost Rs 67 from Thursday in Gujarat, it said. A 500ml pouch of the 'Shakti' variant will now cost 31 in Gujarat, while a 500ml pouch of Cow Milk will be available for Rs 29. One litre pouch of Buffalo Milk pouch will cost Rs 73, while one litre of 'Taaza' pouch will be sold for Rs 55 from May 1, said the release. Mother Dairy has already hiked prices of liquid milk by up to Rs 2 per litre. The new prices will be effective in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Uttarakhand markets. "Mother Dairy is constrained to revise the consumer price of its liquid milk by up to Rs. 2 per litre, effective from April 30, 2025. This price revision has been necessitated to address the significant increase in procurement costs, which have gone up by Rs. 4 - 5 per litre over the past few months. The surge in procurement prices is primarily driven by early onset of summer and heatwave conditions," a Mother Dairy spokesperson said on Tuesday. The prices of bulk vended milk (toned) has been increased to Rs 56 per litre from Rs 54 per litre. Full cream milk will cost Rs 69 per litre against Rs 68 per litre earlier. The price of cow milk has been revised to Rs 57 per litre from Rs 56 earlier and double-toned milk will now cost Rs 51 per litre compared to the earlier price of Rs 49.  (With inputs from Agencies)

Pakistan violates LoC ceasefire for 7th straight night

The officials on Thursday said that Pakistani troops continued ceasefire violations along the Line of Control for the seventh consecutive night by its unprovoked firing in several sectors across three border districts of Jammu and Kashmir and the Indian military responded proportionately, reported news agency PTI. The exchange of fire occurred even though the directors general of military operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan spoke over the hotline on Tuesday amid rising tensions between the two countries over the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. "During the night of April 30-May 1, 2025, Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small arms fire across the Line of Control opposite Kupwara, Uri, and Akhnoor in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir," a Defence spokesperson in Jammu said, reported PTI. Indian Army troops responded swiftly and proportionately, he added. Initially commencing with unprovoked small arms firing at several posts along the LoC in the Kupwara and Baramulla districts of north Kashmir, Pakistan swiftly expanded its ceasefire violation to the Poonch sector and subsequently to the Akhnoor sector of the Jammu region. It was followed by small arms firing on several posts along the LoC in the Sunderbani and Naushera sectors of Rajouri district on Tuesday night. Subsequently, it expanded the firing to the Pargwal sector along the International Border in Jammu district, reported PTI. Since the night of April 24, just hours after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty following the killing of 26 people in the terror attack, Pakistani troops have been resorting to unprovoked firing at various places along the LoC in J&K, beginning from the Kashmir Valley. The Pakistan military has been warned against the unprovoked firings, people familiar with the DGMO talks said. On April 24, Pakistan blocked its airspace for Indian airlines, closed the Wagah border crossing, suspended all trade with India, and stated that any attempt to divert water meant for Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty would be considered an "act of war." India and Pakistan had agreed to a renewed ceasefire along the borders in Jammu and Kashmir in February 2021. The situation has changed significantly since February 2021, when the DGMOs of India and Pakistan reiterated their commitment to the 2003 ceasefire agreement to ensure peace along the de facto border, reported PTI. India shares a total of 3,323 km of border with Pakistan, divided into three parts: the International Border (IB), approximately 2,400 km from Gujarat to the northern banks of the Chenab River in Akhnoor, Jammu; the Line of Control (LoC), 740 km long, running from parts of Jammu to parts of Leh; and the Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL), 110 km long, dividing the Siachen region from NJ 9842 to Indira Col in the north. India shuts airspace for all Pakistani airlines, military flights

India has closed its airspace to all aircraft registered in Pakistan and those operated by Pakistani airlines, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), another major step following the April 22 terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam in which 26 people were killed. India issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) on Wednesday, confirming the closure of its airspace to all Pakistani-registered, operated, or leased aircraft, including military flights, from April 30 to May 23 (estimated duration). Both India and Pakistan have now blocked each other's airlines from using their airspace, as the neighbouring country had already announced this step six days ago. Notably, there has been a rise in ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, and the Indian Army has effectively responded. Security forces have intensified anti-terror operations in the Kashmir valley in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and the government has given armed forces complete operational freedom to decide on the response to the brutal terror attack. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) met a day after the Pahalgam terror attack. In the briefing to the CCS, the cross-border linkages of the terrorist attack were brought out. It was noted that this attack came in the wake of the successful holding of elections in Jammu and Kashmir and its steady progress towards economic growth and development. India has taken a raft of measures against Pakistan for its support to cross-border terrorism, including holding the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance and closing the Integrated Check Post at Attari. India has also decided to curtail the strength of High Commissions. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Government to include caste enumeration in next census

In a significant decision, the Centre on Wednesday said it has decided to include caste enumeration in the forthcoming census  exercise in a “transparent” manner. Announcing the decisions taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA), Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the census comes under the purview of the Centre but some states have done caste enumeration in the name of surveys. Alleging that the states ruled by opposition parties have done caste surveys for political reasons, the minister said it is Modi government's resolve to transparently include caste enumeration in the forthcoming pan-India census exercise. Pahalgam terror attack: Modi-led CCS reviews J&K security situation

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is understood to have deliberated on the overall security situation in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday amid speculations about India’s possible retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack in view of its cross border linkages. The CCS meet was held at the prime minister’s residence, a day after Modi held a meeting with the top military brass and accorded operational freedom to the armed forces on the “mode, targets and timing” of India’s response to the April 22 attack that killed 26 people. It was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and EAM S Jaishankar, people familiar with the matter said.  In the high-level meeting with the defence brass on Tuesday, Modi asserted that the armed forces have “complete operational freedom” to decide on the mode, targets and timing of India's response, government sources said. The prime minister affirmed that it is “our national resolve” to deal a crushing blow to terrorism, government sources said.  Govt revamps NSA Board The Centre on Wednesday revamped the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB). It is learnt that former R&AW chief Alok Joshi has been appointed as NSAB chairman. The NSAB is an advisory body that provides inputs to the National Security Council Secretariat. The new members appointed to the NSAB are former Western Air Commander Air Marshal PM Sinha, former Southern Army Commander Lt Gen A K Singh and Rear Admiral (retd) Monty Khanna, people familiar with the matter said. Former diplomat B Venkatesh Varma and retired IPS Rajiv Ranjan Verma have also been appointed to the NSAB as its members, they said. US urges de-escalation State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said that Washington is reaching out to India and Pakistan “regarding the Kashmir situation”,  and telling “them not to escalate the situation.”  Secretary of State Marco Rubio “expects to speak with the foreign ministers of Pakistan and India as early as today or tomorrow. He is encouraging other national leaders and foreign ministers to reach out to the countries on this issue,” Bruce said. On April 26, US President Donald Trump said that there have always been tensions between India and Pakistan, and the two countries will figure it out between themselves “one way or the other”. Agencies 786 Pakistanis leave, 1465 Indians return  As many as 786 Pakistani nationals, including 55 diplomats, their dependents and support staff, besides eight Indians with Pakistani visa, have left India through the Attari-Wagah border crossing in the last six days following a government order in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, officials said on Wednesday. A total of 1465 Indians, including 25 diplomats and officials, besides 151 Pakistani citizens with long-term Indian visas have crossed over to India from Pakistan through the international border crossing located in Punjab since April 24. The ‘Leave India’ notice to the Pakistani nationals was issued by the government following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. The deadline for exiting India for those holding SAARC visas was April 26. For those carrying medical visas, the deadline was April 29. The deadline for 12 other categories of visas was April 27. Those having long-term, diplomatic or official visas have been exempted from the ‘Leave India’ order. Rahul Gandhi welcomes govt's 'sudden' caste census decision

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he welcomes the government's "sudden" decision to include caste enumeration in the forthcoming census after "11 years of opposing it" but demanded that a timeline be decided for its implementation, news agency PTI reported. His comments came within hours of the government announcing that caste enumeration would be included in the forthcoming census exercise in a "transparent" manner. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the former Congress president said, "We support this [government's decision] completely but we want a timeline. We want to know by when it will be done. This is the first step and Telangana is a model for caste census." While reiterating the demand for removing the 50 per cent cap on reservations, Gandhi said funds should be allocated for the caste census. "We want people's census, not bureaucrats' census," he added. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have been demanding a nationwide caste census, making it a major election issue. Some states such as Bihar, Telangana and Karnataka have already conducted such surveys. PM must act strongly, not dilly-dally: Rahul Gandhi on Pahalgam terror attack Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday that those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack must pay the price for what they have done and Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi must act strongly now and not dilly dally on the action. Addressing the media at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in the national capital, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said those behind the Pahalgam terror attack must also be made to realise they cannot do this to India. Urging PM Modi to take action and not dilly-dally, Gandhi said that the government has the Opposition's 100 per cent support. "The prime minister has to take action. Action has to be clear and strong. The prime minister must not dilly dally and needs to act. He can act in whatever time frame he thinks necessary," Gandhi said. Noting that people have been killed in cold-blooded manner in Pahalgam, he stated that the PM should not waste time and must act now to tell them that India is not going to tolerate this kind of nonsense. "People have been killed in a cold-blooded manner, and it is pretty clear who is responsible for this. The people who are responsible for this must pay the price. The Prime Minister must take decisive and strong action without delay or confusion," he said, noting that the action has to be clear and strong and without any confusion. (With PTI inputs)
