People involved in the dastardly terror attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam will get a strong response in the “near future” and India cannot be “intimidated” by any such terrorist activities, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Wednesday. His remarks in an address at an event came a day after 26 people were killed by terrorists in Pahalgam in an attack that triggered wide-spread outrage within India and abroad.

“From this platform, I assure the countrymen that in view of the incident, the government of India will take every step that is necessary and appropriate,” Singh said. “And we will not only trace those who perpetrated this incident. We will also reach out to those who, sitting behind the scenes, have conspired to carry out the nefarious act on the soil of India,” he said.

A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) led by an Inspector General on Wednesday reached terror-hit Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, sources said. The team would provide assistance to the local police probing the terrorist attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists from different parts of the country, were killed in cold blood, the sources said. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday visited the site and interacted with senior army and police officers. Shah reached the Baisaran meadows in a helicopter and was given a briefing by security officials. The home minister was told about the sequence of events and the possible routes the terrorists took to reach the popular tourist spot, which is surrounded by thick pine forests, sources said. Shah also took an aerial view of the area. Earlier, the home minister attended a wreath-laying ceremony for the victims of the terror attack at the police control room in Srinagar where he asserted that the country will not bend to terror and that those responsible for the killing of tourists at Pahalgam will not be spared.

India cuts ties with Pak, suspends treaty

India on Wednesday suspended the Indus Water Treaty and announced downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan including expulsion of its military attaches in view of cross-border links to the Pahalgam terror attack. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) met this evening under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and firmed up the responses to the terror attack. The CCS also decided to close the Integrated Check Post at Attari with immediate effect, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said at a late evening press briefing. It is learnt that the CCS lasted for around two-and-a-half hours.
