Mumbai News LIVE Updates: Did I give loan waiver assurance ahead of polls: Ajit Pawar`s retort to Oppn`s criticism on promises
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday suggested he was not the one who gave any farm loan waiver assurance before the polls, comments coming after the Congress accused the Mahayuti government of reneging on the promise of providing debt relief to farmers. The Mahayuti alliance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar`s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) registered a landslide victory in the November 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections by winning 230 out of the 288 seats. Talking to reporters, senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat accused the Mahayuti government of not fulfilling the promises it made ahead of the elections. "Farmers are going through difficult times and it is the responsibility of the state government to provide some relief to farmers. Ahead of the elections, the government made several promises and assurances but after coming to power it is not doing anything on it. So people feel that they have been cheated," he said. (PTI)

Mumbai News LIVE Updates: Rupee pares initial gains, settles 1 paisa higher at 84.53 against US dollar
The rupee hit a seven-month high on Friday, briefly breaching the 84-per-dollar mark to touch an intra-day high of 83.76 due to strong foreign fund inflows and robust domestic economic data. However, it pared gains and ended the session marginally higher by 1 paisa at 84.53. Positive factors included record-high GST collections of Rs 2.37 lakh crore in April and a strong manufacturing PMI of 58.2, the highest in 10 months. Analysts cited lower crude oil prices, weak U.S. data, and continued FII inflows as supportive of the rupee, but cautioned that geopolitical tensions could reverse gains. Meanwhile, equity markets ended higher and the dollar index fell. (PTI)
