Building on the overwhelming student response to its joint degree programmes in data analytics and cybersecurity, the University of Mumbai (MU) has announced the launch of a new international joint Master of Science (MS) degree in chemical sciences, in collaboration with Saint Louis University (SLU), a private Jesuit research university in United States. Founded in 1818 by Louis William Valentine DuBourg, it is the oldest university west of the Mississippi River and the second-oldest Jesuit university in the United States.

The course is set to begin in the upcoming 2025-26 academic year, marking a significant expansion in the university’s global academic offerings. The joint degree initiative is part of a broader international academic partnership between the two institutions, aimed at equipping students with global exposure, advanced research capabilities, and industry-relevant skills. As per the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between MU and SLU, the programme will offer students a cross-continental educational experience, culminating in dual degrees from both universities.

Under the structure, students will complete two semesters at Mumbai University followed by two semesters at Saint Louis University. The curriculum, co-developed by both institutions, includes hands-on laboratory training, research projects, and internship opportunities with global industry partners.

Speaking at the official launch event, Mumbai University Vice Chancellor Prof. Ravindra Kulkarni emphasised that the joint programmes represent a “landmark step in the internationalisation of higher education.” He said the initiative is tailored to meet the growing demand for globally recognised, skill-oriented programmes, especially in the rapidly evolving field of chemical sciences.

The announcement follows the successful implementation of joint MS programmes in data analytics and cybersecurity, with 10 students from the 2024–25 batch currently pursuing their third semester at SLU.  These students were awarded 50 per cent tuition fee waivers and received comprehensive support through Mumbai University’s Centre for National and International Collaborations and Student Support, which continues to assist students with visa processing, scholarships, housing, and counseling.

“The move is a commitment to becoming a global hub for higher education, offering students world-class learning experiences and greater opportunities for academic and professional advancement,” said a senior official at the University of Mumbai.

Key benefits of the programme

>> Dual degrees from Mumbai University and Saint Louis University
>> Global academic exposure and access to state-of-the-art research facilities
>> Cross-border research and internship opportunities
>> Development of international perspectives and cultural adaptability
>> Enhanced employability in global scientific and industrial sectors
