In a move to maintain public safety and order, the Mumbai Police have issued a strict ban on the use of firecrackers and fireworks across the city from Sunday, May 11, to June 9 (both days inclusive), a press release issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Akbar Pathan, stated.

The police added that this is a regular preventive order.

The order prohibits everyone within the Mumbai Police’s jurisdiction from letting off or throwing any firecrackers, fireworks, rockets, or similar explosive items.

Acting under the powers granted by clause (u) of sub-section (1) of Section 33, read with sub-section (2) of Section 10 of the Maharashtra Police Act (XXII of 1951), DCP Pathan has directed that the order be widely publicised. It will be announced via loudspeakers and megaphones and displayed at prominent public locations across the city.

The decision comes as part of precautionary measures to ensure law and order during the upcoming period, though specific reasons for the timing have not been officially detailed.

'Govt websites being targeted in unconventional cyber warfare'

Hostile entities from across the border are launching an unconventional cyber warfare campaign against Indian government websites amid the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions, the Maharashtra Cyber department reported on Saturday.

According to news agency PTI, the primary objective of these cyberattacks is to disrupt vital administrative functions and spread misinformation following the launch of Operation Sindoor by Indian forces.

The Maharashtra Cyber Police stated that following the commencement of the operation, there has been a surge in sustained cyberattacks on critical infrastructure systems and official government platforms. These include Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks and digital defacement campaigns aimed at compromising essential public services and eroding public trust in official communications, PTI reported.

In a formal statement, the agency noted: "Hostile cyber entities originating from across the border have intensified efforts to wage a new and unconventional form of aggression and cyber warfare."

It further warned that attackers are not only targeting institutional systems but are also circulating malware-infected files intended to infiltrate individual users’ devices, posing a wider security risk to digital infrastructure, reported PTI.

Authorities have appealed to the citizens and all government departments to exercise heightened vigilance and adopt enhanced cyber hygiene practices as countermeasures continue.
