Schools run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have registered a 92.92 per cent pass percentage in the SSC Class X board exams this year, marking a marginal increase from last year’s 91.56 per cent. Among the 14,966 students who appeared from 247 BMC schools, 13,907 passed, reinforcing the growing academic momentum in Mumbai’s civic-run schools.

Akshara Ajay Verma, a student of Worli Sea Face Municipal Secondary School (English medium), emerged as the topper across all BMC schools, scoring an impressive 96.80 per cent.

But behind that remarkable figure lies a story of resilience and quiet determination. The 15-year-old walked nearly 40 minutes each day from her home in Lower Parel’s Khimji-Nagji Chawl to reach her school in Worli, except on what she fondly calls “lucky days” when she can afford to take a BEST bus. Her father works as a tailor in a garment company in Kalyan, while her mother, a housewife, has been the driving force behind her education, she says.

“I am very happy to be the BMC school topper,” Akshara told mid-day. “I expected this score because I worked hard and stayed focused. I may not have studied for the entire day or all the time, but I put in five to seven hours studying daily.”

Verma credits her mother for her academic journey. “Most of my family were against me going to school, especially an English medium one, but my mother never gave up. She ensured I studied, even when others doubted me. People often dismiss BMC schools, but for many of us, they’re our only option and a strong support system if you truly wish to learn. I love my school,” she said.

Confident and focused, Verma now aims to become a cardiologist. “I want to opt for science in junior college. This is just the beginning. I know I have to work even harder to achieve my dream of becoming a heart specialist.”

This year, 81 BMC schools recorded a 100 per cent pass percentage, and 118 students scored above 90 per cent.

“Akshara’s journey stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the potential that lies within Mumbai’s civic schools waiting to shine when given a chance,” said a senior BMC official.
