In an effort to end the production of Plaster of Paris (PoP) Ganesh idols, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which is firm on its decision to allow only eco-friendly idols, said that it will write to the Ganesh idol makers of the Pen town in Raigad district.
Vasant Raje, president of the Shree Ganesh Murti Kala Samiti, said, “We are going to appeal to the BMC to appoint staff at the entry point of the city so PoP idols do not come for sale in Mumbai. We will raise this demand during the meeting with the administration. Most of the PoP idols came from Pen.”
A BMC official said that the civic body in its letter will inform the sculptors about the Bombay High Court order. The court on January 30 issued a strict order banning the manufacture, sale and immersion of PoP idols. This order was issued to enforce the guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
On February 18, the BMC published guidelines stating that every idol maker should follow the high court order. The official said that the BMC would also provide training to its staff and officials to tell the difference between PoP and clay idols.
