A 27-year-old man was killed and an auto rickshaw driver was injured after a huge tree fell on the vehicle amid rains and winds in Thane district of Maharashtra, civic officials said on Wednesday.
According to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), a huge gulmohar tree fell on an auto-rickshaw in Runwal Nagar of Flower Valley in Thane (West) at around 6 pm on Wednesday, killing one and injuring another person.
The RDMC said that the deceased was the passenger travelling in the auto rickshaw. He was identified as Taufiq Saudagar (27), a resident of Rabodi area.
Shafiq Shabbir, the rickshaw driver, also from Rabodi, suffered a head injury and is receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
Following the incident, officials from the Tree Authority, Rabodi Police Station, local TMC ward, and the Fire Brigade rushed to the spot and launched a rescue and relief operation, the RDMC said.
One fire engine, one rescue vehicle, and support from Disaster Management personnel with a pickup vehicle reached the spot to conduct the operation, the officials said, adding that efforts were underway to remove the fallen tree from the spot.
In an another similar incident, three people were killed a tree fell on a moving auto-rickshaw in Kolsewadi area in Thane on Tuesday night.
According to the officials, a huge tree fell on a moving auto rickshaw in Kolsewadi locality amid heavy unseasonal rains accompanied by strong winds.
The deceased were identified as rickshaw driver Umashankar Varma (53), Nanda Raut (35) and Sitaram Shelke (45), police said.
Thane, Mumbai and adjoining areas are currently witnessing a change in weather patterns.
On Tuesday night the two districts were among other districts in Maharashtra to receive unseasonal rains accompanied with gusty winds and thunderstorm.
A similar weather condition was witnessed on Wednesday in parts of Maharashtra including Thane and Mumbai.
The RDMC said that Thane city recorded 20 mm of rainfall between 8:45 PM and 10:15 pm.
There were 13 incidents of tree collapse, the officials said.
Meanwhile, in neighboring Palghar district, strong winds and heavy rain led to damage to brick kilns and standing crops, officials said
