The Central Railway (CR) on Sunday began the process of dismantling Mumbai's Sion road overbridge during a five-hour daytime block. The work commenced at 10.55 am and continued until 3.55 pm.
“On Sunday, seven old girders of the Sion bridge were removed and the work will continue further,” a CR spokesperson said.

The block was implemented between Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Vidyavihar station. In addition to dismantling the road overbridge, several other maintenance and upgrade works carried out across various sections up to Vidyavihar.
CR and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be jointly reconstructing a new bridge with no spans over the railway area, thereby creating space for two additional rail lines, which will be a part of the 5th and 6th lines. At present, the bridge spans around 40 metres over the railway portion. This will be extended to 51 metres.

An audit report by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) had flagged the deteriorating condition of the bridge as early as 2020, warning that keeping it suspended over active railway lines was highly unsafe, as the structure had exceeded its lifespan.
