Three individuals have been booked by police in Maharashtra’s Thane district for allegedly threatening and verbally abusing a differently abled woman who runs a government-allotted stall in a local village. The incident is being investigated under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, officials said.
According to PTI, the first information report (FIR) was registered on Saturday after the 49-year-old woman lodged a formal complaint with the authorities. Affected by polio since childhood, the complainant serves as the president of the Thane district unit of the Prahar Divyanga Kranti Sanghatana, a grassroots organisation working for the welfare of persons with disabilities.
The woman was allotted the stall as part of a disability welfare initiative by the Maharashtra state government, aimed at providing self-sustaining employment opportunities to differently abled individuals. The complaint states that on March 15, one of the accused, identified as Ramdas Khot, approached her stall and began verbally abusing her using offensive language.
She alleged that Khot not only issued threats but also demanded that she sever all ties with the Prahar Divyanga Kranti Sanghatana. According to the police official quoted by PTI, Khot warned that his associates, Krishna Shinde and Rizvan Sayyed would visit the woman’s residence and physically harm her if she failed to comply with his demands.
The woman, fearing for her safety and deeply distressed by the threats, approached the police after weeks of anxiety. No arrests have been made so far, but police officials confirmed that the matter is under active investigation.
