The controversy came to light when Sae-Ron's family accused the South Korean star of dating their daughter when she was a minor. While Kim Soo-Hyun has denied claims made by the family, a new audio recording sees Sae-Ron speaking about her physical relations with the actor.
Kim Sae-Ron's legal representative provides audio proof
An audio recording revealed by Garo Sero Institute shows Kim Sae-Ron admitting to having sex with Kim Soo Hyun when she was in 8th grade. On May 7, 2025, Bu Ji Seok, the legal representative of the bereaved family of the late Kim Sae-Ron, and Kim Se Ui of Garo Sero Institute held a press conference in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, where they made the audio recording public. In the audio Kim Sae-Ron can he heard talking details about her relationship with Soo-Hyun.
During the recording from January 10, 2025, Kim Sae Ron first re-confirmed that she dated Kim Soo Hyun from middle school until she entered University. Kim Sae-Ron confirmed they had sex for the first time when she was in her second year of middle school (8th grade).

Kim Sae Ron: The first time we did it was when I was in 8th grade, during the winter vacation.
Acquaintance: Wow, 8th grade?
Kim Sae Ron: Even then… F***, thinking about it now, should I say that I was being taken advantage of?
Acquaintance: F***, of course you were being taken advantage of.
Acquaintance: I’m seriously going to kill him, that f***er.
Kim Sae Ron: There aren’t many people that know that we dated when I was in middle school, but they all had the same reaction. They saw me as the crazy one, asked why I was letting him get away with it.
What Kim Soo-hyun said at his press conference in March
Kim Soo-hyun, one of the most notable figures in the South Korean entertainment industry, has found himself at the center of a scandal that has sent shockwaves through the industry and among fans.
Kim Soo-hyun began the press conference by apologizing. He said, “Firstly, I am sorry. Because of me, I think so many people are suffering. And also, I feel sorry that the late actor [Kim Sae-ron] isn’t able to rest in peace. I consider myself a coward. I have always been too preoccupied with holding on to what I have. I couldn’t even trust the goodwill that came my way, always fearing loss, harm, and running away—denying everything. That’s why it took me so long to stand here today.”
Kim Soo-hyun was in tears as he addressed the allegations made by Kim Sae-ron's family. He admitted that they dated for a year but insisted that their relationship only began when she was an adult.
"I was in the same situation when [Kim Sae-ron] posted a picture of her and me when Queen of Tears was airing. I was with her for about a year, around four years before the drama aired. But at that time, I denied our relationship. I fully understand that criticizing my choice is justified.”
Explaining why he kept their relationship a secret, he said, "When Queen of Tears was airing, I had so much to protect as its lead actor. What would have happened if I had admitted to a year-long relationship? What would happen to the actors, the staff who were working overnight, and the production team who had everything staked on that project? What would happen to our agency’s employees?” He added, “I’m willing to receive any criticism that says I am selfish and cowardly.”
