The 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival kicked off this Tuesday, and we already have a dress mishap, courtesy of the new dress code disallowing nudity and extravagantly large outfits on the red carpet. For her Cannes 2025 appearance, one of the jury members, Halle Berry, had entrusted Gaurav Gupta with designing an amazing outfit for her. The Indian designer followed the memo, but Berry had to ditch the ensemble at the last minute due to the new rule in place.
Halle Berry’s last-minute outfit change
New regulations banning nudity on the red carpet, as well as long dress trains, forced Berry to leave behind her stunning gown specially crafted for the occasion, as the train was too big. Talking about the last-minute wardrobe change, the Oscar winner told reporters, "I had an amazing dress to wear tonight by Gupta, and I cannot wear it because the train is too big." She further added, "Of course, I'm going to follow the rules."
Celebs broke the rules on the red carpet
While the jury member decided to make last-minute changes to her outfit to abide by the rules, many visibly didn’t care. German model Heidi Klum appeared at the opening ceremony in a striking pink gown featuring a long train at least three metres (10 feet) long. Chinese actress and influencer Wan Qianhui also turned up in a grand white gown with a sweeping train.
Robert De Niro was bestowed with the honorary Palme d'Or
One of the biggest moments of Day 1 at the grand event came when veteran actor Robert De Niro was bestowed with the honorary Palme d'Or for Lifetime Achievement on Tuesday evening (midnight in India). The Palme d'Or was presented to De Niro by actor and film producer Leonardo DiCaprio at the festival’s opening ceremony.
After being honoured with the prestigious Cannes Lifetime Achievement Award, De Niro said in a statement, "I have such close feelings for the Festival de Cannes... Especially now, when there’s so much in the world pulling us apart, Cannes brings us together — storytellers, filmmakers, fans, and friends. It’s like coming home," according to Variety.
