World Kempo Championship
The Sports Kempo Association India added a feather to their cap in the recently concluded World Kempo Championship, held from 23rd to 27th April 2025, in Portugal. With 104 countries participating, India stood 6th all over the world. India won 6 Golds, 7 Silvers and 10 Bronze medals.
In fact, a top 3 ranking was missed by a whisker, owing to a cancelled Turkish Airlines flight, due to which two events were lost.
The Indian contingent was trained by their India president Dr Ravi Lalwani, a veteran in the field with 45 years of teaching experience, and team manager Reshma Lalwani, the only woman samurai in India. Speaking to Mid-Day, Ravi Lalwani said, “The children who competed did a great job. Championships like these also give them great international exposure. Before the championship began, they met American kickboxing champion Benny ‘The Jet’ Urquidez, and even trained with him. Maximum children were from Utpal Shanghai Global School in Mumbai, whose management sponsored our expenses and gave us a lot of facilities. Dr Lalwani added, “I’d like to specially note students like Anaaya Saluja, Vida Gala, Parisa Lalwani, Pari Dubashi, Naisha Ranawat, Pahal Kapoor, Kriti Shah, Dhiya Siroya, Reva Patel, Divit Shah, Kshitij Ukey, Eklavya Goyal and Nivaan Kankariya.”
In addition to this, Maanav Chhugani, Mannan Malik and Kartik Saravana also passed the World Referee Course, adding another feather to India’s cap.
