Trevor Patel, the shining star on the Indian riding horizon who hit the headlines last month when he rode six winners on the final day (April 24) of the Mumbai racing season, had a nasty fall on the Bangalore racetrack on Saturday. The western India-based jockey was riding Sheryl, a filly owned by Dr Vijay Mallya, in the Southern Empire Cup.

After a slightly slow jump Trevor gradually improved the Mallya filly through the rails to get close to the front running duo of Adulation (Suraj Narredu up) and Attorney General (A Imran Khan up). At the 300-meter marker, he attempted to force his way through a narrow gap between the two; Sheryl stumbled in the process, and Trevor was thrown off the saddle.

He was rushed to the Apollo hospital immediately. Zeyn Mirza, managing director of the United Racing & Bloodstock Breeding (URBB), who retains Trevor to ride all the Mallya horses, was by his side at the hospital.
