All eyes will be on Glenn Maxwell as a struggling Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on the fifth-placed Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Chepauk on Wednesday. Despite an underwhelming run in the 2025 IPL season, Maxwell's all-round abilities, particularly his prowess against spin and his handy off-spin bowling, could be pivotal in this high-stakes encounter.

This season has been a far cry from Maxwell's typically explosive IPL performances. Over his last six innings, the Australian has managed a mere 48 runs, with a string of disappointing scores: 7, 7, 3, 1, 30, and 0. His average stands at a dismal 8, prompting growing criticism from fans and analysts alike.

Many have questioned Maxwell's continued presence in the playing XI, citing not only his inconsistency with the bat but also a diminished strike rate and a tendency to lose his wicket early. Observers point to a lack of balance between calculated aggression and composure.

Yet Maxwell remains a conundrum for the PBKS think tank. While his batting has faltered, his utility with the ball has helped keep him relevant. He has delivered crucial overs and picked up key wickets, offering a level of versatility that few overseas players can match. In a squad with limited all-round options, his bowling continues to justify his selection.

Against CSK at Chepauk, a venue where spin dominates, Maxwell's historical strength against spin could prove decisive. Despite his current slump, he boasts an impressive career strike rate of 161.8 against spin and has smashed 88 boundaries off spinners across his IPL career. This makes him PBKS's second-best spin player behind Shreyas Iyer, and a potentially vital counter to CSK's potent spin attack.

With Marcus Stoinis notably less comfortable against spin, Maxwell's role becomes even more important. A solid performance on the turning Chepauk pitch could not only reignite his form but also provide PBKS with stability against CSK spinners.

Moreover, his off-spin bowling offers a tactical edge. CSK's middle order includes key left-handers such as Sam Curran, Shivam Dube, and Ravindra Jadeja, against whom Maxwell's angles and variations can be especially effective. His ability to deliver tight overs and apply pressure during the death overs adds further value, making him a potential game-changer in conditions tailor-made for his skill set.
