Chennai Super Kings stand on the verge of an unwanted record as they gear up to host the Punjab Kings in a showdown that has become more about restoring pride than securing a playoff berth.

With just two wins from nine matches, the five-time champions find themselves languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table. In contrast, PBKS have enjoyed a relatively steady campaign, occupying fifth place with five wins, three losses, and one no result.

For CSK, this season has been an uncharacteristic and dismal chapter in their illustrious legacy. Their home ground, Chepauk, once considered a fortress, has failed to offer its usual advantage, with the team managing just a solitary win in five matches played there. Their campaign began with promise, registering a victory over arch-rivals Mumbai Indians, but what followed was a cascade of inconsistent and disappointing performances.

What happened the last time CSK played PBKS in IPL 2025?

In a high-octane clash, it was the home side PBKS who held their nerve to register a commendable 18-run victory over the five-time champions at Mullanpur.

The standout performer of the evening was young batting sensation Priyansh Arya, who was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match for his breathtaking innings. Arya lit up the stadium with a scintillating 103 off just 42 deliveries, showcasing a blend of fearless stroke play and remarkable composure. His innings laid the foundation for PBKS's commanding total and left the CSK bowlers struggling for answers.

Supporting Arya at the other end was the dependable Shashank Singh, who anchored the innings with a well-compiled 52 off 36 balls, ensuring momentum was maintained through the middle overs. Together, the duo stitched a vital partnership that helped Punjab post a competitive total on a pitch that slightly favoured the batters.

In response, CSK's chase was led by Devon Conway, who played a fluent knock of 69 runs off 49 balls, keeping his side in the hunt. Despite his efforts, Chennai's middle-order failed to accelerate when it mattered most, losing crucial wickets at regular intervals and eventually falling short of the target by 18 runs.

Among the bowlers, Lockie Ferguson stood out for PBKS with an economical and incisive spell, finishing with 2 for 40, including key wickets that derailed CSK's chase. On the other side, CSK's bowling was spearheaded by experienced campaigners Ravichandran Ashwin (2/48) and Khaleel Ahmed (2/45). While they managed to contain the flow of runs in the latter stages, the damage had already been done during Arya's explosive assault.

This win bolstered Punjab Kings' playoff ambitions, while CSK were left to reflect on yet another missed opportunity in what has been a challenging season.
