Last year, the government approved the Marathi Language Policy, which recommended the use of the state language in all public affairs to further efforts aimed at the preservation, promotion, dissemination, and development of Marathi

Last week, the Maharashtra transport department had also said that it would soon mandate the display of public service messages in Marathi on all registered commercial vehicles to promote the state language

In February, the Maharashtra government mandated the use of Marathi for communication in all its offices and semi-government establishments, and warned that employees who fail to follow the directive will face disciplinary action

The planning department issued a notification making the use of Marathi language mandatory in government and semi-government offices and asserted the decision applies to communication, official signage, and documentation across the state

The state government directed that nameplates and signage in its offices and public sector enterprises must be in Marathi. New businesses must register their names in Marathi without English translations, it emphasised
