Fire Service Week commemorates the devastating explosion aboard the SS Fort Stikine in Mumbai Port on 14 April 1944, which resulted in extensive loss of life and property. The parade received a floral welcome at the Memonwada Fire Station in Bhendi Bazaar, highlighting community involvement in the initiative.
The aim of Fire Service Week is to educate citizens about fire prevention, safety protocols, and emergency preparedness.
Throughout the week, fire brigades conduct demonstrations, safety drills, mock evacuations, and awareness sessions in residential and commercial areas.
The National Safety Council has been actively supporting Fire Service Week since 1999 by distributing safety material and guidelines to organisations nationwide.
The theme for Fire Service Week 2025 is "Unite to Ignite, a Fire-Safe India", which emphasises collective responsibility in fire prevention.
Educational institutions often join the campaign by organising student competitions, safety talks, and first-aid workshops.
Industrial and commercial establishments are encouraged to carry out fire audits, review emergency exits, and conduct internal safety drills.
Firefighters visit schools, housing societies, and offices during this week to educate people on handling LPG leaks, electrical fires, and extinguisher usage.
Fire Service Week also serves as a tribute to firefighters who have sacrificed their lives while serving the community.
