Mumbai is bracing for a wet spell this week, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain and thunderstorm alert for Tuesday, May 6. Cloudy skies and light to moderate showers are expected to continue throughout the week, giving some relief from the harsh summer sun, though humidity levels are likely to stay high.
According to the IMD, overcast conditions will persist over Mumbai today. The city is forecast to receive rainfall and experience thunderstorms later in the day. By 9 am, the temperature stood at 30 degrees Celsius with a humidity level of 74 per cent. Winds were recorded at a mild 6 km/h. The temperature is expected to rise gradually as the day progresses.

IMD issues thunderstorm warning across Mumbai, Thane and Palghar
Tuesday's weather report predicts afternoon or evening thundershowers, with minimum and maximum temperatures likely to hover around 28 and 32 degrees Celsius respectively. The rainfall will be light to moderate, with some areas possibly experiencing heavier showers.
The IMD also anticipates more rain on Tuesday, 7th May, along with thunderstorms. On that day, Mumbai is expected to record temperatures between 28 and 31 degrees Celsius. The cloudy and wet weather is expected to stretch across the week, creating a typical pre-monsoon setting.
Mumbai's air quality has shown improvement, with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reporting an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 58. This falls under the 'Satisfactory' category. While the AQI is not cause for major concern, people with respiratory issues are advised to minimise time spent outdoors and consider wearing masks as a precaution.

A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar on Tuesday and Wednesday, warning of moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
According to the IMD's weekly forecast, Mumbai is likely to receive light rain by Monday afternoon, providing some respite from the intense heat. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may stay close to 26 degrees Celsius.
From Tuesday onwards, the weather is expected to intensify with thunderstorms, light to moderate rain, and winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. The weather is expected to ease slightly by Thursday and Friday, with cloudy skies and occasional drizzle.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Chandrapur and Gadchiroli in Vidarbha, while yellow alerts are in place for several other areas including Pune, Nashik, Jalgaon, Satara, Thane, Palghar, and parts of Central Maharashtra and Marathwada.
This change in weather is being influenced by a western disturbance currently active over northern India, affecting Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi, which is now causing ripple effects in southern and western parts of the country.
Widespread rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, is expected across much of Maharashtra on May 5. This includes Konkan, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha. On May 6, rainfall is likely to continue in places such as Satara, Pune, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, and eastern districts including Beed, Jalna, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
By May 7, most of Konkan, Central, and Northern Maharashtra will continue to receive rain, while Vidarbha is expected to remain mostly dry.
Though the rain will bring much-needed relief from the high temperatures, recently hovering between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius in parts of Central Maharashtra and Marathwada, IMD has urged residents to stay cautious, especially during thunderstorms and gusty winds.
