Bhayanderpada Flyover on Ghodbunder Road inaugurated, check key highlights of the new bridge

The Bhayanderpada Flyover on Ghodbunder Road in Thane district of Maharashtra was inaugurated on Wednesday by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, officials said.

The new flyover is being seen as a major solution to Thane's growing traffic issues, especially on the busy Ghodbunder Road, which connects key routes leading to Gujarat, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).

Deputy CM Shinde inaugurated the flyover in the presence of state Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and senior officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Here are key highlights of the Bhayanderpada Flyover-

- The total Ramp Length of the flyover is 601 metres and at Thane end it is 391.48 metres with an underpass of 20.4 metres.

- At the Borivali end the flyover is of 189.88 metres

- Its Carriageway is 2+2 lanes (7.5 metres each)

- It has dual 2-lane underpass (20.4 metres long and 19.7 metres wide)

- Traffic Volume Capacity of the flyover is 73,333 Passenger Car Units (PCUs)

- The flyover is built on the viaduct of Metro Lines 4 and 4A, optimising land use and integrating road with future metro systems.

The officials said that it will ease heavy traffic caused by heavy vehicles and daily office commuters. The flyover reduces congestion between Gaimukh and Waghbil areas in Thane and will saves travel time of motorists.

At the inauguration, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said that it was a "lifestyle transformation" for people in Thane.

"This project is not just a road - it's a transformation in lifestyle that brings relief to the people of Thane. The improvement on a crucial route like Ghodbunder Road will not only streamline traffic but also act as a catalyst for the overall development of the region. It is a great example of how reducing traffic congestion can save both time and fuel," he said.

The flyover will act as a key part of the interstate freight corridor from Gujarat to JNPT and the residents from Thane East, Gaimukh, Kasarvadavali, Brahmand, Waghbil, and Bhayanderpada will be able to use the route for a faster, safer, and smoother commutes, officials said.

A dedicated pedestrian subway has also been constructed beneath the flyover, allowing safe crossing and reducing pressure on the main road, they said.

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, MMRDA Commissioner, said, "The inauguration of the Bhayanderpada underpass is a significant step toward creating a sustainable and efficient transport system in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This project will not only improve traffic flow but also boost economic and industrial activity. We are prioritizing ease and safety in the daily commute of citizens."
