Virat Kohli, the iconic batsman and face of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, has remained a symbol of unwavering commitment to the franchise since the inception of the IPL in 2008.
Despite not having lifted the coveted trophy, Kohli has stood firmly by the Red and Gold, turning down multiple chances to switch allegiances over the years.
In a candid conversation on the latest episode of the RCB Podcast, the 36-year-old delved into the reasons behind his long-standing association with the franchise and the thought process that led to his unexpected decision to relinquish captaincy in 2021.
Kohli disclosed that during the peak of his playing career, from 2016 to 2019, he received several offers to join other IPL teams. However, he remained with RCB out of a deep sense of connection and respect for the franchise and its supporters.
"I've mentioned this before, I had the opportunity to explore, to look elsewhere, especially in the very prime peak years of my career from 16 to 19. I had constant suggestions and what not to switch and this, that and the other," Kohli shared.
With 8,933 runs in 278 matches, including eight centuries and 64 half-centuries, Kohli is RCB’s all-time leading run-scorer, boasting an average of 39.52. Yet, his journey has not been without challenges. He opened up about the mounting pressure of captaining both India and RCB simultaneously.
"I was always in this space, what do I do? I was exposed to it 24/7. It did get very tough on me, and it did get too much in the end. That is why I stepped down because I felt like, if I have decided I want to be in this place, I need to be happy..."
While he briefly considered switching teams, Kohli ultimately chose loyalty over change. "And I am just going to see it through now. Whether we win or do not win, it is fine. This is my moment... I do not think any silverware or any trophy can come close to that..."
In IPL 2025, Kohli is leading the run charts with 505 runs in 11 matches, averaging 63.12 and striking at 143.46. RCB currently tops the table with eight wins, and they next face Lucknow Super Giants on May 9.
