Sunrisers Hyderabad secured a crucial five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in their IPL 2025 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, delivering a significant blow to CSK’s playoff aspirations. With this defeat, CSK finds itself teetering on the brink of elimination, having managed just two wins in eight matches.

Opting to bowl first in a high-pressure encounter, SRH executed their plans flawlessly on a sluggish Chepauk pitch. Leading the charge with the ball was Harshal Patel, who delivered a stellar spell of 4 for 28. His clever variations and control made scoring difficult for CSK batters. He was well-supported by captain Pat Cummins (2/21), Mohammed Shami (1/28), Jaydev Unadkat (2/21), and all-rounder Kamindu Mendis (1/26), who also stunned the crowd with a brilliant diving catch later in the game.

CSK’s innings began on a sour note as young opener Shaik Rasheed was dismissed off the very first delivery, edging Shami to Abhishek Sharma at first slip. Ayush Mhatre, however, responded with intent, counter-attacking with a rapid 30 off just 19 deliveries. Taking on the pace trio of Shami, Cummins, and Unadkat, Mhatre kept the scoreboard ticking, offering CSK a glimmer of hope.

However, the innings soon lost steam. Sam Curran fell cheaply, miscuing a slower delivery from Harshal Patel straight to Aniket Verma. Mhatre followed shortly after, mistiming Cummins to Ishan Kishan, leaving CSK struggling at 50 for 3 after the powerplay.

Veteran Ravindra Jadeja, handed a reprieve when Harshal dropped a simple chance, couldn't capitalize for long. Kamindu Mendis breached his defence with a sharp delivery that crashed into the stumps. At the halfway stage, CSK were 76 for 4, clearly on the back foot.

Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis looked to rebuild. Dube pierced the covers twice off Shami, while Brevis unleashed a flurry of sixes, smashing Mendis for three in an over and adding another off Harshal. Just as the South African appeared set for a defining knock, he was caught at long-off by Mendis for 42 off 25.

The wickets kept tumbling as Dube holed out to Abhishek and Dhoni, marking his 400th T20 appearance, failed to leave a mark. He sliced Harshal straight to point. Deepak Hooda’s 22 off 21 provided a late push, helping CSK crawl to 154, a total that ultimately proved insufficient.
