The 25-year-old will miss the forthcoming Twenty20 series against the West Indies and then October's ODI series in India. England's one day captain Alistair Cook could replace him as Twenty20 vice-captain.
Broad revealed the injury news on Twitter: "Bad news on the shoulder: torn a muscle. Gutted."
