It is now one of San Francisco`s most popular tourist destinations. Before turning into a tourist destination, Alcatraz was infamous for being one of America’s most feared prisons, known for its harsh conditions, strict discipline. Operating from 1934 to 1963 on a remote island in San Francisco Bay, it was believed to be escape-proof due to the cold, treacherous waters surrounding it. The mysterious 1962 escape attempt added to its legend. Alcatraz came to symbolise punishment over rehabilitation and has since become iconic through films and pop culture, cementing its dark reputation in history.
