The construction of a second foot overbridge (FOB) for Wankhede Stadium reached a milestone over the past weekend, as five large steel girders were successfully placed across all active railway tracks.
This new FOB is located at the southern end of the stadium. Last month, a similar bridge was completed at the northern end, improving accessibility to the arena from both sides. A Western Railway (WR) spokesperson told mid-day recently that the girders had been launched for the Wankhede south foot overbridge between Churchgate and Marine Lines.
It is heartening to learn that another FOB is well on its way. Several commuter groups do ask the Railways for FOBs or to repair existing ones at different stations. At times, they highlight how a certain FOB is defunct, and it will make better sense to shift it to another spot or site on the station platform. All suggestions need to be considered and implemented on merit. After all, it is the commuter who is the primary stakeholder when it comes to FOBs. He or she is the one who will be using the FOBs on the daily commute.
Having said that, we as people need to be responsible too. While authorities build infrastructure, it is up to us to use this very wisely and well. With FOBs present, there are a few who persist in taking the dangerous shortcut and haring across the tracks. While the FOB may be just a few steps away, people persist in saving steps or saving seconds at extreme peril to life. It is specious to applaud new infra and continue behaving dangerously. Use the FOBs that exist, making that trudge to the bridge. A few extra steps will not hurt and they are literally a lifesaver.
