Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost from the United States has been elected as the new pope, becoming the first American-born leader of the Catholic Church. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV and is the 267th pope. His election was announced on May 8, 2025, after two days of voting. Born in Chicago in 1955, he spent many years working in Peru and is known for helping poor communities. He appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to greet thousands of cheering people. He follows Pope Francis, who passed away in April. Former U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated him. As pope, Leo XIV now faces big challenges, including uniting the Church and dealing with past scandals and global issues
