A man allegedly spurned by a 25-year-old woman shot her dead and later surrendered to police in the Kotwali Dehat area of Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district on Sunday, a police officer said.

According to news agency PTI, Shivang Tyagi fired at the woman while she was riding pillion on her father’s motorcycle near Badhapur village. The accused and the victim hailed from the Karonda Chaudhary village.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Sanjeev Vajpayee, said the woman’s father rushed her to the nearest primary health centre, where doctors declared her dead.

Tyagi subsequently surrendered to police and handed over the pistol used in the shooting, reported PTI. He confessed to the murder, stating that he and the woman had studied together and that he had feelings for her.

“He revealed that the victim was due to get married on May 1 and that this was his motive for the murder,” said the officer.

The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

A manhunt has been launched to apprehend the culprits and an investigation is currently underway, he added.

Youth shot at outside his home in Dehradun, one detained

Police have detained one individual in connection with the shooting of a youth outside his home in Dehradun, officials stated on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the accused, Rohan and Yugantar, arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at Moin, who was standing outside his residence in the Banjarawala area, police said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the motive behind the shooting stemmed from an old rivalry involving a girl, they added.

Ayushi Saini, a friend of the accused who was reportedly present at the scene, has also been taken into custody for questioning.

Moin, a native of Uttar Pradesh, had been living with his brother-in-law, Sajid Malik, for several months. After being shot, he was immediately taken to hospital and is currently undergoing treatment.

Based on Moin’s complaint, a case has been registered against Rohan and Yugantar. Police reviewed CCTV footage, which showed Saini nearby during the incident. She was subsequently detained for questioning.

Efforts to apprehend the remaining accused are ongoing.
