Three terrorists with affiliation to the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed in an encounter in Shopian, South Kashmir, on Tuesday. The security forces have identified the identities of two of the three terrorists, ANI reported.
The three terrorists were killed in the Shukroo forest area of Keller in Shopian district. According to sources, one them was identified as Shahid Kuttay, the son of Mohd Yousuf Kuttay, a resident of Chotipora Heerpora in Shopian.
According to ANI, Shahid Kuttay was a ‘Category A’ LeT operative, who was involved in the firing incident that at the Danish Resort in Srinagar on April 8, 2024. Two German tourists and one driver were injured in the incident.
Reports state that Shahid Kuttay joined LeT on March 8, 2023. Previously, he was involved in the killing of a BJP Sarpanch at Heerpora on May 18, 2024, and was also a suspect in the killing of a Territorial Army personnel at Behibagh in Kulgam on February 3 this year.
Another terrorist has been identified as Adnan Shafi Dar, the son of Mohd Shafi Dar, who was earlier a resident of Wanduna Melhora in Shopian.
Adnan Shafi Dar joined a terror organisation on October 18, 2024, and was a ‘category C’ LeT terrorist. He was involved in the killing of some non-local labourers at Wachi in Shopian on October 18, 2024, reported ANI.
India-Pakistan tensions: Encounter took place at 8 am, say sources
Various intelligence agencies are working to establish the identity of the third terrorist.
According to sources, the terrorists were encountered around 8 am on Monday following specific intelligence related about them hiding in the Shukroo forest area.
Earlier, the security forces had launched a massive cordon-and-search operation in the forests of Kellar after receiving specific input about the presence of some terrorists in the region, a top police officer said.
Meanwhile, posters were also noticed in several parts of Pulwama District, advertising a Rs 20-lakh reward for information on terrorists engaged in the Pahalgam terror attack, ANI reported. Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had revealed the sketches and IDs of three terrorists suspected of being involved in the attack. The three terrorists, who are linked with LeT, have been identified as Hussain Thoker, an Anantnag native; Ali Bhai, also known as Talha Bhai; and Hasim Musa, also known as Suleiman. Musa and Talha are alleged Pakistani terrorists, while Thokar is a Kashmiri resident.
Monday’s operation comes amid the escalating India-Pakistan tensions following New Delhi’s tremendous success in Operation Sindoor, in which precision strikes killed nearly 100 terror terrorists in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The camps struck by India included Bahawalpur, the Jaish headquarters, and Muridke – a significant Lashkar training site.
