Rahul Gandhi welcomes govt's 'sudden' caste census decision

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he welcomes the government's "sudden" decision to include caste enumeration in the forthcoming census after "11 years of opposing it" but demanded that a timeline be decided for its implementation, news agency PTI reported. His comments came within hours of the government announcing that caste enumeration would be included in the forthcoming census exercise in a "transparent" manner. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the former Congress president said, "We support this [government's decision] completely but we want a timeline. We want to know by when it will be done. This is the first step and Telangana is a model for caste census." While reiterating the demand for removing the 50 per cent cap on reservations, Gandhi said funds should be allocated for the caste census. "We want people's census, not bureaucrats' census," he added. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have been demanding a nationwide caste census, making it a major election issue. Some states such as Bihar, Telangana and Karnataka have already conducted such surveys. PM must act strongly, not dilly-dally: Rahul Gandhi on Pahalgam terror attack Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday that those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack must pay the price for what they have done and Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi must act strongly now and not dilly dally on the action. Addressing the media at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in the national capital, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said those behind the Pahalgam terror attack must also be made to realise they cannot do this to India. Urging PM Modi to take action and not dilly-dally, Gandhi said that the government has the Opposition's 100 per cent support. "The prime minister has to take action. Action has to be clear and strong. The prime minister must not dilly dally and needs to act. He can act in whatever time frame he thinks necessary," Gandhi said. Noting that people have been killed in cold-blooded manner in Pahalgam, he stated that the PM should not waste time and must act now to tell them that India is not going to tolerate this kind of nonsense. "People have been killed in a cold-blooded manner, and it is pretty clear who is responsible for this. The people who are responsible for this must pay the price. The Prime Minister must take decisive and strong action without delay or confusion," he said, noting that the action has to be clear and strong and without any confusion. (With PTI inputs)

Adani Power generates 20 per cent more electricity in 2024-25

Adani Power Limited has generated 102.2 Billion Units (BU) of power in financial year 2024-25, which is a surge by 19.5 per cent from the 85.5 BU clocked in 2023-24, the company's earnings results released Wednesday showed. According to company information, the Adani Group company's consolidated power sale volume was at 95.9 BU in 2024-25, up by 20.7 per cent from 79.4 BU in 2023-24. The company has attributed the surge to robust power demand and higher operating capacity, reported news agency ANI. The consolidated continuing total revenues were higher by 10.8 per cent at Rs 56,473 crore in 2024-25 against the Rs 50,960 crore recorded in 2023-24. In the January-March quarter, consolidated power sale volume was at 26.4 BU, up by 18.9 per cent from 22.2 BU in same quarter of 2023-24, due to growing power demand and higher operating capacity. The consolidated continuing total revenue for Q4 2024-25 was higher by 5.3 per cent at Rs 14,522 crore vs Rs 13,787 crore in Q4 2023-24, primarily due to higher volume, offset by lower tariff realisation, reported ANI. Adani Power's Profit After Tax (PAT), however, was lower for 2024-25 at Rs 12,750 crore as compared to the Rs 20,829 crore clocked in 2023-24. The decline has been attributed to lower one-time revenue recognition and higher tax charge. The PAT for January-March 2024-25 was similar at Rs 2,599 crore to the PAT for Q4 2023-24, affected by lower recognition of one-time items. Commenting on the results, SB Khyalia, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Adani Power Limited, said, "Adani Power has posted ever higher operating and financial performance for FY 2024-25, aptly demonstrating the strength and resilience of the Adani Portfolio companies." "As we progress quickly in the next phase of capacity expansion, we are prioritising capital and cost efficiencies to sharpen our competitive edge and extend our sectoral leadership across key parameters. Amur Falcon ‘Chiuluan 2’ continues its journey, reaches Odisha

The Amur Falcon ‘Chiuluan 2’ is continuing its journey and has reached western Odisha after taking a break at night in Chhattisgarh, an official said on Wednesday. Dr. Suresh Kumar, Senior Scientist from Wildlife Institute of India said, "We have got the latest location of Chiuluan 2, at 5 pm on Wednesday it was in Western Odisha. It had definitely stopped for the night yesterday in Chhattisgarh." The satellite tagged Amur falcon Chiuluan 2 has arrived in India from Somalia. According to the experts tracking the bird's journey, the falcon travelled 3,800 km nonstop in 93 hours from Somalia to India and was heading towards the North East part of the country. The satellite transmitter fitted Amur Falcon Chiuluan 2 had arrived in Gujarat first. The approximate travel distance from its departure from Somalia to coming close to Bharuch in Gujarat was 3,100 km and Chiuluan 2 covered this distance in 67 hours nonstop flight. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Hitler Singh from Manipur forest department had earlier said, "Based on the data received today our falcon fueled by strong winds flew at a speed of 55 km/hr in the last leg of the oceanic crossing and covered a distance of 1000 km in little more than 18 hours and entered Gujarat at 2 am today morning near Somnath and continued its nonstop flight and crossing Khambat flew past Bharuch and Ankleshwar and has not landed as per last received data." When asked if the Amur falcon Chiuluan 2 had taken a halt, the officials had said, "I am not sure, it might have taken a momentarily rest and might continue to fly. This shall be known from the next update. If the bird travels less than 500 km in 24 hours it must be taking rest for some time in the central Indian forest." In the month of November 2024, two Amur falcon Chiuluan 2 and a female Gwangram were fitted with satellite transmitter and released at Chiuluan village in Tamenglong district of Manipur by the local forest department in the presence of Divisional Forest Officer Hitler Singh and Dr Suresh Kumar from WII. Several other Amur falcons were fitted with identification rings and released too. The main objective of the project is to study the migratory route of these birds.

LoP Rahul Gandhi requested in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a special session of both houses of Parliament to showcase unity and determination following the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.  "The terrorist attack in Pahalgam has outraged every Indian. At this critical time, India must show that we will always stand together against terrorism," LoP Rahul Gandhi stated in the letter. "The Opposition believes that a special session of both Houses of Parliament should be convened, where the representatives of the people can show their unity and determination. We request that such a special session be convened at the earliest," Rahul Gandhi further added.  "At this critical time, India must show that we always stand together against terrorism," Gandhi wrote in a post on X on Tuesday. The incident occurred around 3 pm when terrorists descended from the mountain in Baisaran Valley and started firing at the tourists. The incident comes when Kashmir is witnessing a surge in tourist arrivals after reeling under militancy for years. Also, the 38-day Amarnath pilgrimage is scheduled to begin on July 3. Some of the injured were brought down from the meadows by local people on their ponies.  India on April 24 downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan and announced a raft of measures, including the expulsion of Pakistani military attaches, suspension of the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 and the immediate shutting down of the Attari land-transit post in view of the cross-border links to the Pahalgam terror attack.

14 dead in Kolkata hotel blaze; PM announces Rs 2-lakh aid to victims' kin

At least 14 people have died in the massive fire that destroyed a budget hotel located in the congested Mechuapatti area of Burrabazar in central Kolkata on Tuesday, news agency PTI reported. Thirteen others have suffered injuries in the incident, which has led to a political blame game and calls for accountability. The fire broke out around 7.30 pm in the six-storey Rituraj Hotel and quickly engulfed the building, trapping several of the 88 guests staying in 42 rooms at the time, officials said. "Most of those who died were trapped inside and could not escape the thick smoke," said a senior officer of the Fire and Emergency Services Department. The majority of the victims died due to suffocation, while a few reportedly jumped off upper floors in panic, PTI reported. The victims include 11 men, a woman and two children. All the 14 bodies have been identified, said Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim after visiting the injured on Wednesday. Kolkata hotel blaze brought to control after 10 hours of firefighting He also informed that arrangements were being made to hand over the bodies to the victims' families. Police Commissioner Manoj Verma and State Fire and Emergency Services Minister Sujit Bose initially confirmed 15 fatalities, but later revised the toll to 14 after cross-verification with hospitals and rescue agencies, reported PTI. "The initial reports mentioned 15 casualties. There was some confusion. But after verification, the number has been corrected to 14. That is the confirmed figure we have at the moment," Verma told reporters. However, Hakim maintained that 15 had died. "All the deceased have been identified and police are in touch with the families," he said. Ten fire tenders were deployed, and after nearly 10 hours of intense firefighting, the blaze was brought under control in the early hours of Wednesday, officials said. Did Kolkata hotel flout fire compliance norms? Meanwhile, eyewitnesses described chilling scenes of horror, with flames leaping from windows, guests screaming for help, and some people jumping off from windows to escape the blaze. Firefighters used ladders and ropes to rescue dozens of trapped guests as thick black smoke billowed from the building. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but new inputs indicate gross negligence and flouting of fire safety norms by the hotel. "The hotel allegedly violated multiple safety regulations. The only staircase was blocked, and ventilation points were sealed due to an under-construction, illegal dance bar on the same floor, which severely hampered evacuation efforts," a senior fire department official said. Bose confirmed that the hotel had defunct fire alarms and sprinklers. "This is a clear case of negligence. The hotel had no active fire safety systems in place," the minister said. Injured to be given Rs 50,000-aid, says PM Modi Director General of Fire Services, Ranvir Kumar, said the hotel's fire safety clearance had expired three years ago. "An FIR (first information report) has been filed, and the hotel owners are absconding," he said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the tragedy and announced financial assistance for the families of the victims. "Anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire mishap in Kolkata. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. An ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000," the PMO said in a post on X. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed condolences and maintained that 14 people have died in the incident. "My heart goes out to the victims of the fire incident that took place at a private hotel [Rituraj] in Burra Bazar area. I monitored the rescue and firefight operations throughout the night and mobilised maximal fire brigade services in the area. Fourteen died eventually in total because there were combustible materials stored inside. Investigation has been ordered," Banerjee posted on X. CM announces Rs 2-lakh compensation for victims' families The chief minister has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the victims and Rs 50,000 to the injured. Following the incident, Kolkata Police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, the political temperature soared over the tragedy, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders attacking the ruling Trinamool Congress government. State BJP President Sukanta Majumdar accused Chief Minister Banerjee of insensitivity for continuing with the inauguration of the Jagannath Dham in Digha while the fire tragedy was unfolding in Kolkata. "Yesterday, a devastating fire in the Mechhua area of Burrabazar claimed the lives of more than 14 innocent people. Many more are battling for their lives. Yet, the chief minister chose to remain silent and continued with her religious event in Digha," Majumdar said in a statement. BJP leader Sajal Ghosh also slammed the government, pointing out to previous fire tragedies like the 2010 Stephen Court and 2011 AMRI Hospital infernos. "How many more lives must be lost before the government acts on unsafe buildings in Kolkata?" he asked. TMC Member of Parliament (MP) Abhishek Banerjee expressed sorrow over the incident. "My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and I pray for the swift recovery of those injured. The state administration, along with volunteers from various organisations, is making every effort to support those affected and to ensure effective relief and rehabilitation. In this difficult hour, we stand in unwavering solidarity with all those impacted," he wrote on X. (With PTI inputs)

Pahalgam attack: PM says armed forces have full freedom to decide on targets

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi asserted on Tuesday that the armed forces have "complete operational freedom" to decide on the mode, targets and timing of India's response to the Pahalgam terror attack, as he chaired a meeting with the top defence establishment. During the high-level meeting, which was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the chiefs of three services, PM Modi affirmed that it is the national resolve to deal a crushing blow to terrorism, government sources said. PM Modi expressed complete faith and confidence in the professional abilities of the armed forces. "They have complete operational freedom to decide on the mode, targets and timing of our response," a source quoted Modi as saying. Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan was also part of the meeting, which was held amid India weighing its options for countermeasures following the Pahalgam terror attack which left at least 26 civilians, mostly tourists, dead. Modi has vowed to pursue the terrorists behind the attack and their patrons, a clear reference to Pakistan which has a history of sponsoring terror strikes in India, to the "ends of earth" and inflict the harshest punishment on them "beyond their imagination". Terrorists had gunned down tourists, who were from different parts of the country, in the popular destination of Pahalgam in Kashmir exactly a week ago on April 22. This most brutal attack on civilians in a long spell of time in the region has sparked a wave of outrage across the country and a demand for retaliatory action against the perpetrators and their handlers. The prime minister's tough assertions coupled with his government's avowed muscular stand on the issues of national security have heightened expectations of a stringent counteraction from India. In the past, the Modi government carried out surgical strikes inside Pakistan after the terror attack on army soldiers in Uri in 2016 and the Balakot air strike after the killings of CRPF personnel in Pulwama. Following the terror strike in Pahalgam, India has taken a series of measures targeting Pakistan, including putting in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty with the neighbouring country. Earlier in the day, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan had chaired a high-level meeting which was attended by chiefs of three paramilitary forces and senior officers of two other security organisations, sources said. There was no official word on its agenda.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Panic in Pakistan; airspace restricted as country expects Indian strike

Amid the ongoing stand-off between India and Pakistan over the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, the Pakistani military, it seems, has started preparing for Indian military action. Sources in the country's military establishment said on Wednesday that Pakistani Navy vessels, including its frigates and submarines, have already positioned themselves in their respective harbours in the sea to be able to tackle any possible Indian movement. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Air Force has reduced flying operations by over 50 per cent, and only essential operations are being conducted to avoid confusion in the airspace, sources said. Earlier, faced with mounting global pressure, a jittery Pakistan leadership resorted to accusations against India following the deadly Pahalgam incident that killed 26 people. The Federal Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, had issued a statement claiming that Pakistan has "credible intelligence" suggesting India plans to launch military action against the nation within the next 24-36 hours. In a post on X, Tarar wrote, "Pakistan has credible intelligence that India intends to carry out military action against Pakistan in the next 24-36 hours on the pretext of baseless and concocted allegations of involvement in the Pahalgam incident." The post added, "Indian self-assumed hubris role of Judge, Jury and Executioner in the region is reckless and vehemently rejected. Pakistan has been the victim of terrorism itself and truly understands the pain of this scourge. We have always condemned it in all its forms and manifestations anywhere in the world. Being a responsible state, Pakistan offered a credible, transparent, and independent investigation by a neutral commission of experts, which was heartily welcomed." In another instance, Pakistan's foreign minister, Ishaq Dar, stated in the National Assembly that it was under Pakistan's pressure that the name of the resistance forum (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, was deleted from the UNSC statement on Pahalgam, proving once again Pakistan's tacit support to terror operatives. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephonic conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and pleaded for a neutral investigation into the Pahalgam incident. "Had a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. I reaffirmed Pakistan's condemnation of terrorism in all its forms, rejected baseless Indian accusations, and called for a transparent and neutral investigation into the Pahalgam incident...Pakistan remains committed to peace, but will defend its sovereignty with full force if challenged," Sharif wrote on X on Tuesday. The statements come after India took decisive action against Pakistan after the attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which killed 26 people.
