A 43-year-old woman died by suicide at Mumbai’s popular hangout spot Marine Drive, even as hundreds of people present there remained unfazed, with some recording the incident on their mobile phones, news agency PTI reported.
The incident was reported at 7.30 pm on Monday, a police officer said on Tuesday.
While the crowds remained onlookers, a traffic police constable, Suresh Bhikaji Gosavi, put his own life in peril and attempted to rescue the woman, whose identity has not been established yet.
Gosavi and his associate tried to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the woman.
“She was rushed to a hospital where she died during treatment," the officer added.
Police are trying to trace the family members of the victim.
Meanwhile, constable Gosavi was felicitated with a Rs 5,000-reward for his daredevil act, the officer said.
72-year-old dies by suicide in Mumbai's Dahisar
A 72-year-old woman, who was suffering from an illness, died by suicide in her building in the Dahisar area of Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The victim was living alone in her flat for the past six months after the death of her husband.
She left behind a suicide note stating that she was ending her life due to illness, as she was mentally disturbed, police said.
Her body was spotted by a watchman of the housing society, following which police were alerted.
A case of accidental death has been registered at MHB Police Station in Borivli, an officer said.
19-year-old medical college student dies by suicide in Pune
A 19-year-old All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhopal student allegedly ended his life in Pune on Monday, citing academic stress among the reasons, police said.
The victim belonged to Maharashtra's Beed district and was studying at AIIMS, said an official.
He allegedly took the extreme step in the bathroom of a flat in Wanowrie area, said Rajkumar Shinde, deputy commissioner of police.
"At 10.15 am the control room received a call that the body of a young man was found in the bathroom at Panchratna Housing Society.... Investigation revealed that the victim was suffering from depression and was under medication for the past few months," the official said.
"He was in the city for a sports competition. A suicide note was found on his WhatsApp account," the DCP added.
The note cited a change in curriculum, class attendance and academic stress as some of the prime reasons for the action.
