The ladies compartment of a Mumbai local is a microcosm of the city’s motherly love. Illustrator Hitekshi Dama (below) witnesses it every day on her commute. A series of eight illustrations capture cute motherly moments that make for the perfect Mother’s Day celebrations.
“I always observe mothers playing with their children as they take them to school. Sometimes, other women in the compartment join in with jokes or play with them. The compartment is a sisterhood by itself. The women even take care of the children that hawkers bring on the train,” Dama told us.
Gatecrashers in Mumbai
Lucknow-based cyclist duo Priya Kumari and Pradeep Kumar knocked on Mumbai’s doors last weekend to conclude a four-month long Delhi-Mumbai rally. Pedalling from India Gate in New Delhi, the duo charted nearly 3,000 km traversing Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat on the way to Gateway of India in Colaba. “Along the way, we made nearly 140 stops to spread the word of menstrual hygiene in schools, colleges and public institutions. A straight route to Mumbai would have been nearly 1,400 km, but going the extra mile was worth it,” Kumari shared.

Mumbai’s cycling community, to no surprise, staged a grand welcome. Cyclists from across the city’s clubs congregated in Colaba for a meet and greet with the duo. City-based cyclist Vijay Malhotra recalled, “One of the highlights was a reclining bicycle put together using spare parts. It is an unusual sight in India. I volunteered to take it for a spin outside the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. It garnered some interesting looks.” With the finish line crossed, the duo from Lucknow will now head to schools and colleges to host sessions on menstrual health. Silently, they read

Last weekend, city-based silent reading club, Mumbai Bookies ditched their usual outdoor addas for a cosy reading session at Crossword bookstore in Kemps Corner in the early hours of the day. “The idea was to experience the bookstore in its purest form, before it opened to the public at 10 am. We didn’t make any rules, but as always people didn’t engage in conversations or use their phones. They quietly read their books and browsed the shelves, surrounded by almost 200 fellow readers. It also helped us beat the unforgiving afternoon heat,” a team member shared.
Meeting of worlds

Chhatrapati Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and the British Museum have joined hands to co-curate a truly ‘world class’ exhibition. Three sculptures — of the Hindu god Vishnu, the ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet and the Roman god Bacchus (or Greek Dionysus) — now stand side-by-side at Room 3 of the British Museum in London till October 19.
“These figures have never been imagined sharing the same space before. This also marks the British Museum’s future plans to spotlight cross-cultural exhibits and embrace co-curation. Since summer holidays have already begun, we are excited to see how tourists receive this special sight,” Joyoti Roy (inset), co-curator, shared with this diarist.

If you spot a fleet of white winged visitors off the Marve Coast this week, it might just be the seabird sailboats joining the ongoing Junior Nationals 2025. Organised by the Yachting Association India, the week-long activities will see nearly 150 young sailors from across India’s academies and clubs battle it out on the serene seas. “We spent last weekend practising and training our sailors off the coast. The real test lies in the concluding days from tomorrow till May 9. We have nearly 10 sailors, all under 18 years old participating in the competition,” revealed Sagar Kudale, coach, Royal Bombay Yacht Club.
