The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday initiated action against illegal construction in parts of Mumbai and demolished multiple structures in Versova village and Madh Island, civic officials said.
BMC demolished five multi-storey structures in Versova and nine bungalows in Madh Island, an official said.
The BMC has identified 35 illegal structures in Versova and 120 more unauthorised bungalows, he said.
“Multi-storey structures were built in Versova village within the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). Despite repeated notices and instructions from the BMC, construction was not stopped,” said officials.
Considering the risk to life due to structures constructed on marshland, the BMC began demolition on Friday, officials said.
The BMC on Friday began the demolition of the structures identified as Kutir House, a five-storey structure located at Tere Gully, Sai Shradha Niwas, a single-storey building, Naga House, a four-storey building in Goma Gully, Zemane House, a three-storey building located at Mandvi Building and Ganesh Sagar, a three-storey building located at Bazar Gully, said the official.
These structures were constructed illegally over the years without obtaining any permissions.
The process involved the use of 35 hand breakers, eight gas cutters, eight generators, and 80 BMC officers and staff, an official said.
Meanwhile, on Friday, the BMC also demolished nine bungalows in Madh that were constructed using fake CRZ maps.
The BMC took action an additional 120 bungalows constructed allegedly using 'fraudulent maps'.
The nine bungalows demolished were located in Erangal and Valnai villages of Madh Island. Three JCB machines were used during this operation, the civic official said.
The area of construction ranged between 200 square feet and 2,500 square feet.
According to civic records, these bungalows were constructed last year.
