The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has announced a proposed hike in fare prices on its buses which is likely to be implemented this week.

The BEST is waiting for the Mumbai Regional Transport Authority's (MRTA) approval.

The revised fare has been approved by both the BEST Committee and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the officials said.

BMC chief Bhushan Gagrani had approved BEST fare hike proposal and now the BEST administration is waiting for the final approval of the MRTA, officials said.

Sources from the BEST said that it is hopeful that MRTA will approve the proposal this week and after the approval the fare hike will immediately implemented.

The move aims to make fare slabs more systematic and provide increased benefits to specific groups such as schoolchildren, senior citizens, and disabled passengers, an official statement said.

A BEST spokesperson said, "We are yet to get approval from the MRTA. After approval of MRTA the fare hike will be implemented."

According to the proposal, commuters need to pay an additional Rs 2 as toll if they are travelling into or out of the city.

In 2019, BEST restructured its bus fare. During that restructuring, half tickets for children aged between 5 and 12 were scrapped, as fares had been reduced. However, this time, BEST has reintroduced half tickets.

Currently, the maximum fare is Rs 20 and the minimum fare is Rs 5 for non-AC buses. These will now be Rs 60 and Rs 10 respectively.

For AC buses, the current minimum fare is Rs 6 and the maximum is Rs 25, which will now be revised to Rs 12 and Rs 65.

After travelling 50 kilometres, commuters will need to pay Rs 5 for every additional 5 km.

BEST bus ridership is currently around 31 lakh passengers daily in its fleet of 2,186 buses.
