A 35-year-old woman was found murdered in her home in Maharashtra's Thane district, a police official said on Thursday, adding that a probe has been launched into the matter by the police, reported the PTI.
The deceased was found dead with a serious head injury, he said.
The victim has been identified as Anita Deepak Goyal who lived at Jiwdani Nagara in the Diva area of Thane district, the official said.
It is suspected that she was killed around midnight on April 29, said the official from Mumbra police station. It appears a stone was smashed on her forehead, he said.
It was immediately not clear if she was alone in the house at the time of the crime.
A case has been registered and a probe is underway, the official added.
Newborn girl found dead in Thane
In an another incident, the body of a newborn girl was found at Kalwa area of Maharashtra's Thane district, a police official said on Thursday, according to the PTI.
A passerby noticed the body lying near a public toilet located close to a company on Wednesday, an official of Kalwa police station said.
After being informed, a police team collected the body and sent it to a government hospital for post-mortem.
Based on a complaint filed by a citizen, the police have registered an FIR under section 94 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against an unidentified person, he said, the news agency reported.
Meanwhile, a five-year-old girl was killed and her younger sister seriously injured when a speeding car hit them in Thane city's Naupada locality, police said on Thursday, as per a PTI report.
The accident took place on Wednesday night when the siblings, residents of the Louiswadi area, had gone to a shop near their home to buy some food item, they said.
A speeding car knocked them down when they were returning home and drove away. The deceased was identified as Laxmi Gopal Kale, while her sister Gangubai (3) was injured in the accident and admitted to a local hospital, said the police.
An officer with the Naupada police station said based on a complaint lodged by the grandmother of the siblings, they have registered an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act against the unidentified car driver the police said.
